Night Music for John Lennon was composed by Lukas Foss between 1980-1981. It is a concertante work for a large or small orchestra and a brass quintet. The composition is structured in three movements: "Prelude," "Fugue," and "Chorale." The Boston Modern Orchestra Project (BMOP) has released a new album featuring this work. The album also includes Foss's Cello Concert and Concerto for Solo Percussion and Large or Small Orchestra.

In Orpheus and Euridice, a work composed in 1972 and expanded in 1983 as a dedication to Yehudi Menuhin and Edna Michell, Lukas Foss sought to evoke the feeling of an unfamiliar time and place by weaving elements of pantomime with unconventional instrumental timbres. The effect of the new synthesis sought to humanize the work while balancing its alienated, otherworldly character with moments of warm-blooded passion, and to heighten the sense of loss at the end.

Christa Ludwig's fabulous singing of the Jeremiah Symphony's concluding lament, the brilliant pianism of Lukas Foss in the Second Symphony ("The Masque" is particularly engaging), and a spectacular performance of the Chichester Psalms. There's also much to be said for the alert playing of the Israel Philharmonic: not as jazzy as in New York, but very accomplished and emphatic, with no holding back at all in the climaxes…. As remastered these performances sound pretty marvelous, and if pushed to choose single versions of these works, you can't go wrong here. - David Hurwitz
