Cet album est – osons l’avouer – une découverte pour l’auteur de ces lignes, même si son artisan n’est pas un débutant. Une première rencontre, donc, avec un musicien qui avait publié en 2017 Funambule, disque ayant reçu au moment de sa sortie un accueil très positif. Notre camarade Julien Aunos n’avait d’ailleurs pas manqué de souligner dans sa chronique « l’élégance folle » de sa musique. Contrebassiste et compositeur, François Poitou propose aujourd’hui Le Sec et la Lune, un titre qui serait à rapprocher d’un souvenir d’une sortie sous-marine.

François Poitou est contrebassiste de jazz mais aussi compositeur et arrangeur. Pour son premier projet en leader, il a monté un groupe assez original sans batteur. Un quintet violon, alto, guitare, saxophone et contrebasse donc. Pour le disque, un second violon vient compléter la formation. Huit compositions et une reprise de Matthieu Chédid pour un répertoire étonnant, inclassable mais extrêmement goûteux et audacieux. Les cordes tissent une trame assez douce (parfois en pizzicati) que le saxophone ou la clarinette basse ponctue tantôt allègrement, tantôt délicatement. Poitou et sa contrebasse assurant la pulsation. Mais l’album vaut beaucoup par le jeu littéralement envoûtant de Federico Casagrande à la guitare. De la musique de chambre contemporaine qui swingue, qui groove cela pourrait fort bien s’appeler du jazz.

I have assembled these airs from the second half\u0301 of the seventeenth century to complete the exploration begun with Et la fleur vole (early seventeenth century, ALPHA314) and A l'ombre d'un ormeau (early eighteenth century, ALPHA342)', says Francois Lazarevitch in the introduction to this new release. 'I am particularly interested in combining the qualities of sound and breathiness of the voice and the flute.'Love songs, dance tunes and brunettes on pastoral themes follow one another in a programme at once moving and erudite. Louis Couperin (1626-1661) has long been a fabled name among French keyboard composers. Born in the provinces in the late 1620s, he was 'discovered' by the visiting court harpsichordist Jacques Champion Chambonnières in about 1650; soon he had an appointment at court and was titulaire of the organ at St Gervais in Paris, founding the Couperin dynasty that included most prominently his nephew, François Couperin 'le grand'.

Although less well known than his nephew François, Louis Couperin was one of the finest and most influential keyboard composers of the seventeenth century, his music mixing elegance, refined lyrical expressiveness, structural clarity and a touch of noble melancholy in a way that is always interesting and frequently powerful. These qualities suffuse the movements of his many suites, most notably perhaps in the slower ones–the eloquent préludes non mésurés (in which the music is only half notated, so as to allow the performer to exercise his improvisatory skills), the expansive allemandes, and perhaps above all in the gripping repetitions of the concluding chaconnes and passacailles–but on this disc it is also represented by a moving Tombeau lamenting the death of the lutenist Blancrocher. Laurence Cummings is a neat and intelligent player whose sound technique enables him to make the best of the resonant yet gentle sonorities of his instrument, and he is well recorded. A must for harpsichord enthusiasts, and a real bargain for all.

This important release presents the complete music for harpsichord by Henri D’Anglebert. D’Angelbert was a famous keyboard virtuoso and composer at the court of Louis the XIV, the Sun King. His style is typically French, expressed in a rich counterpoint and lavish ornamentation, a free and improvisatory style, in which sometimes the metre indications are missing (“non mesuré”) and a high level of virtuosity.
