Flutist, composer, and teacher Paul Taffanel (1844-1908) was to have a decisive influence on the development of chamber music for winds in France. While his work as a flutist and educator can in no way be undervalued, Taffanel’s musical career extended far beyond this. He was also a renowned composer and conductor, and had considerable entrepreneurial talent. In 1879 he founded the Société de musique de chambre pour instruments à vent (Society of Chamber Music for Wind Instruments). The organization’s objective was to expand and promote chamber music repertoire for winds. Taffanel took the classic octet as his starting point, the orchestration that had given rise to the Harmonie music of Mozart and Beethoven’s time, but the society also aimed to profile soloists and bring new French and foreign works to light. The concert program of the society’s inaugural performance on 6 February 1879, in Salons Pleyel-Wolff is indeed a testimony to this.

Returning to the Montpellier Codex for this programme of motets and chansons from 13th-century France, Anonymous 4 explores two dominant themes of the period: love and longing for the earthly/earthy Marion and the heavenly/virginal Marie. The Montpellier Codex, from which Anonymous 4 draw all these motets, was collected in Paris around the year 1300 and is the richest single source of 13th-century French polyphony. With a repertory spanning the entire 13th century, it contains polyphonic works in all the major forms of its era: organum, conductus, hocket and, primarily, motet (315 motets in all).

Although she was best known as the pretty, perky teenager who won the 1965 Eurovision Song Contest with her hit "Poupée de Cire, Poupée de Son," French pop singer France Gall had a much longer and more varied career than that, releasing solid records for decades. Although only a cult figure in most of the rest of the world, Gall was a major star and beloved figure in her native country.

American lyric soprano Nicole Cabell's 2007 solo debut album was named Editor’s Choice by Gramophone and received an incredible amount of critical acclaim and several prestigious awards. Drawn strongly to the French vocal repertoire, on this 2014 release Cabell explores the world of the chanson, and its direct descendant, the mélodie: France’s answer to the German lied, or art song. The finest of mélodie composers are represented on this collection: Georges Bizet, Henri Duparc, Franz Liszt and Maurice Ravel. Cabell's rich, silky-smooth voice and beautifully nuanced interpretations are supported with sensitivity and elegance by pianist Craig Terry.

France Gall is a compilation album by French singer France Gall, released in 1988. Although she's best-known as the pretty, perky teenager who won the 1965 Eurovision Song Contest with her hit "Poupee de Cire, Poupee de Son," French pop singer France Gall has had a much longer and more varied career than that, having released solid records almost non-stop since the early '60s. Although only a cult figure in most of the rest of the world, Gall is a major star and beloved figure in her native country.

One of the most popular French entertainers of the '70s and '80s, actor and singer/songwriter Michel Jonasz's 2007 release, Chanson Française is dedicated to the various performers who have inspired him throughout his versatile and prolific career. Its 12 tracks include interpretations of songs made famous by Georges Brassens ("Les Copains d'Abord"), Jacques Brel ("La Chanson des Vieux Amants") and Claude Nougaro ("Armstrong"), alongside two original compositions, a tribute to Léo Férre and the title track, which explains his decision to release a covers album.

Singer/songwriter Jacques Dutronc gained popularity in his native France with his provocative songs that matched the rebellious spirit of the '60s so well. Though he was absent from the musical scene for nearly a decade, pursuing a film career, he successfully returned to music in the early '80s and still remains one of the most popular performers in the French-speaking world. Dutronc started as a guitarist in the small rock group El Toro et les Cyclones, who recorded two singles. In 1965, he was asked by the manager of Françoise Hardy to write a few songs for her, so Dutronc composed "Le Temps de l'Amour" and "Va Pas Prendre un Tambour." Having proven himself a successful songwriter, Dutronc decided to pursue a solo career. It started in 1966 with such hits as "Et Moi et Moi, et Moi," "On Nous Cache Tout, On Nous Dit Rien," "Les Play-Boys," and others. His 1968 song "Paris S'Eveille" became an instant classic of French pop music. In 1973, Dutronc successfully ventured into film acting, which would eventually bring him a Best Actor Cesar (a French equivalent to Oscar) for the leading role in Van Gogh.

The 1987 album CQF Dutronc boasted the work of Earl Slick (David Bowie's guitarist), Jean-Jacques Burnel (Stranglers), and Etienne Daho, among others. After the successful 1992 tour, Dutronc released a live album and a collection of his old hits. His 1995 studio album Brèves Rencontres was produced and arranged by Erdal Kizilcay.
