DJ Maestro, (Martijn Barkhuis), is a Dutch DJ, composer and arranger. Barkhuis has a classic background. Barkhuis played the violin from the age of seven to twenty-seven, including with the Netherlands Student Orchestra. DJ Maestro studied politics and art management with a specialization in musicology. He gained fame when he was invited by the jazz label Blue Note Records to become the world's first DJ to make compilations of mixes from the label's archives. He received five platinum records for these Blue Note Trip compilations. After working for Blue Note, he signed with the Verve jazz label. Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater was extremely popular throughout Europe soon after it was composed in 1736. Countless printed and handwritten versions of this work, which was considered the stylistic ideal of sacred music in the 18th century, can be found in libraries all over the world. There are five manuscript copies of the Stabat Mater in the archives of Málaga Cathedral. This recording presents a version performed when Juan Francés de Iribarren was chapel master there. He did not copy the work exactly, but created a revision with substantial changes. Also included in the recording are some of Iribarren’s own works.

The everyday is transfigured in this intimate collection of chamber music and songs by leading young Scottish composer Martin Suckling – settings for mezzo-soprano and piano of five magical, moonlit poems by Michael Donaghy and a String Quintet written in collaboration with the poet Frances Leviston, whose readings of her own texts frame the four movements of a piece which pays dual homage to Schubert and to Emily Dickinson. Nocturne for violin and cello bears witness to Suckling’s night vigils at the composing desk, setting down his pen as the stillness starts to ripple with birdsong, while the cello solo Her Lullaby is a nostalgic reflection on the early years of parenthood that also displays Suckling’s characteristically refined harmonic palette.
