This 3-CD box set follows previous collections Looking Back (2011) and Keep Lookin’ (2014), which ran the gamut of musical styles which emanated from the UK, diverse and yet united in their dancefloor appeal, from the discotheques of the day to nouveau Mod clubs in the 21st century.

Devoted to the hybrid of '60s mod, British Invasion, and psychedelia known as "freakbeat," the series That Driving Beat ran to five volumes in the first decade of the 21st century. This five-CD box set brings them all together, presenting around 150 rarities from the 1963-1967 era, most of them British (a few items from Continental Europe are also thrown in). Pinpointing who this should be recommended to is tough, because any passionate collector of freakbeat is already going to have some to a lot (but almost certainly not all) of it. At the same time, it's likely too much for the novice, for whom single-volume comps with a higher percentage of killer cuts make far better initiations. But make no mistake: this certainly is good value if you like the style and don't have the majority of the contents, and not just for the sheer quantity of the material. Odd tracks like the Poets' "That's the Way It's Got to Be" and Him & the Others' "She's Got Eyes That Tell Lies" aside, there aren't that many absolute undisputed monsters of the genre here, most of it's at least decent, and good percentage of it is quite good.

Conventional wisdom has it that the French are not all that great at rock & roll – pop music, yes indeed, but not rock & roll – and no matter how many times people cite Metal Urbain, Stinky Toys, or Les Thugs, name-checking more than a tiny handful of French bands that really give up the rock is a challenge. But apparently there was a glorious window of time in the mid-'60s when France had a pretty lively rock scene, given the 28 good-to-excellent sides collected on Psychegaelic: French Freakbeat, which serves up a variety of Gallic rock, R&B, and acid-tinged garage rock tunes. The selection ranges from uptempo Merseybeat-style (or in this case Seinebeat-style) rockers like "Hello Josephine" by Les Witackers and straight-up garage rock such as Patrick Samson's rowdy translation of "Gloria" to the cool and bluesy organ-driven "Pourquoi l'Amour a Deux" by Les Fleurs de Pavot (the group name translates as "The Poppy Flowers," fans of not-so-subtle drug references), the fuzz-guitar mayhem of Benjamin's "Un Train," and less readily classifiable craziness like "Bof!" by the Brummels, "L.S.D. 25" by 5 Gentlemen, and "Fou" (literally "Crazy") by Jacques Da Sylva.

Brown & Explosive.Looking Back is designed by Andy Morten (Shindig magazine, Rev-Ola).Many of the rarities here are drawn from cult British labels such as Planet, Ember and Chapter One. Other obscurities were only issued abroad (The Sorrows, The Alan Bown Set). Many of the artists, such as Arthur Brown and The Groundhogs, went on to enjoy huge success. The Valentines, for example, were fronted by a pre-AC/DC Bon Scott!
