Over the course of his nearly five decade career, trumpeter Freddie Hubbard established himself as one of the most versatile and inventive jazz musicians of the twentieth century. The Grammy-winning virtuoso appeared on some of the most important albums in the genre, including seminal works by Ornette Coleman, Herbie Hancock, Art Blakey, John Coltrane, and countless others. The Artistry Of Freddie Hubbard, his fifth album for Impulse!, is a spellbinding piece of jazz history. Hubbard’s molten lines are augmented by the trombone work of the legendary Curtis Fuller and tenor saxophonist John Gilmore of the Sun Ra Archestra. One of the all-time great jazz records.

Freddie Hubbard got a bad rap from jazz critics while at Columbia – most absolutely hated the music he made there because it indulged pop, soul, funk, and even disco abundantly. He got the last laugh, though. The critics were wrong. Great Britain's BGO offers proof in this two-disc set that contains Hubbard's first three Columbia albums from the mid-'70s: High Energy (1974), the provocatively titled Liquid Love (1975), and Windjammer (1976). Hubbard employed his own quintet on High Energy (something he couldn't do previously at CTI), which was comprised of Junior Cook, George Cables, Kent Brinkley, and Ralph Penland.

Freddie Hubbard released The Black Angel in the same year as the landmark Miles Davis album Bitches Brew. Its obvious Hubbard wanted to appeal to the emerging crossover rock/jazz crowd of the era. The presence of bop, however, still permeated Hubbard's playing, unlike Miles who had long since dropped the form.
