Joseph Haydns Stabat Mater, written in 1767, was the first church work the composer wrote after entering the service of Prince Esterhazy in Eisenstadt. Unlike almost all his other sacred works, it soon circulated in numerous copies and established Haydns reputation as the leading vocal composer of his day. This recording under the direction of Frieder Bernius - joined by a distinguished line-up of soloists, the Kammerchor Stuttgart and the Hofkapelle Stuttgart - follows the new critical edition of the work by Carus.

With his Kammerchor Stuttgart, Frieder Bernius has recorded Jan Dismas Zelenka’s impressive "Missa Sancti Josephi" which, although already composed in 1732, is in no way inferior to Zelenka’s famous late masses. Up to now this work was not available for performance since the autograph score - the only preserved source - was severely damaged in 1945. However, a reconstruction was possible and is now available for the first time in an edition at Carus-Verlag; the recording by Frieder Bernius was also made on the basis of this edition. As always, Bernius collaborates with high-ranking soloists, including - for the first time - the young soprano Julia Lezhneva. The recording is complemented by Zelenka's psalm compositions "De profundis" and "In exitu Israel".

Bach's Mass in B minor is one of his greatest and most ambitious works of all. She has occupied the composer for more than two decades, from the Sanctus (1724) to the Missa from 1733 to the supplementary Ordinarium theorems of the last years of life. Thus, the work in its rich variety of arias, duets and concertante and fugal choirs forms an essence of his profound skills and personal style. The "greatest musical work of all time and people" (as enthusiastic as the first editor Hans Georg Nägeli 1818) and one of the most demanding choral-symphonic works of all lies in a high-profile, based on principles of historical performance practice recording with Frieder Bernius, the Stuttgart Chamber Choir and the Baroque orchestra Stuttgart before.

The Mass solenelle in D minor by Luigi Cherubini is an extraordinary work: after a seemingly familiar beginning, melodic progressions and harmonic developments always take a completely new direction through unforeseen and witty turns. Subtle instrumentation lends many sections an exquisite sonority. Thanks to the wonderful Kammerchor Stuttgart, a select group of soloists (including Ruth Ziesak) and, last but not least, the conducting by Frieder Bernius, the audience of the Schleswig-Holstein-Musik Festival 2001 experienced a great musical moment, which is now finally available on CD.

The Lutheran hymns in choral settings and chorale cantatas from the 16th century to the present day (including works by Praetorius, Scheidt, Bach, Mendelssohn, Jennefelt, and Schwemmer) are performed by the Kammerchor Stuttgart under the direction of Frieder Bernius and the Athesinus Consort Berlin conducted by Klaus-Martin Bresgott. The choral settings are complemented by chorale arrangements for organ. Extensive liner notes with meditations on selected hymns by Margot Käßmann, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Markus Meckel, Judith Zander, Uwe Kolbe, and others complete the recordings.

With its highly complex and artful opening chorus, the cantata Ein feste Burg is one of the highlights among Bach's cantatas. With the Kammerchor Stuttgart under Frieder Bernius and the soloists Sarah Wegener, David Allsopp, Thomas Hobbs and Peter Harvey, this masterpiece finds a more than adequate recording here. The cantata is supplemented by the Missa brevis in G minor, BWV 235, one of the four Lutheran masses Bach composed at the end of the 1730s.

This new release is the eleventh volume in Profils Semperoper Edition, and features Johann Adolf Hasses three-act opera Attilio Regolo. Attilio Regolo is an Italian-language opera seria by Johann Adolph Hasse based on the story of Marcus Atilius Regulus, a Roman general taken prisoner in Carthage, who elects death rather than ransom. Metastasio wrote the libretto in 1740 for the birthday of the emperor Charles VI but the illness, then death, of the emperor prevented the libretto being set to music at the time.
