…Friedman spreads his wings of imagination freely. His lyrical but aggressive play intoxicates the listeners. On every tune, the trio delivers the beautiful melody line with a creative interplay.

Pianist Don Friedman's debt to Bill Evans was obvious in the early '60s, particularly on standards, but he also had his own creative spirit to offer. This 1997 CD reissue brings out Friedman's third of four Riverside dates, teaming him with the obscure bassist Dick Kniss and drummer Dick Berk. […] A fine, well-rounded set from the underrated pianist. ~Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
Friedman’s project, Other Worlds, is a trio with an instrumentation and sound all its own, featuring the exciting French accordianist Jean Louis Matinier and the brilliant American bass virtuoso Anthony Cox. Their new CD Other Worlds, was recorded in November 1996 for Intuition Records and released in December 1997.
After four excellent Riverside albums (all reissued in the OJC series) that saw Don Friedman moving ever more emphatically into free areas, the pianist took the full plunge. He succeeded Paul Bley in Jimmy Giuffre's innovative group and formed a quartet with Attila Zoller, the talented Hungarian guitarist Friedman had met earlier in Herbie Mann's band. After successful appearances in Europe and at Newport, Friedman and Zoller recorded this stunning program with the brilliant assistance of two other giants, Richard Davis and Joe Chambers. The diverse compositions employ collective improvisation, tone rows, and open structures as well as examples of chordal and modal forms, and retain a melodic clarity and a lithe propulsion not always associated with the avant-garde. Metamorphosis, while shamefully ignored upon its release, has survived as one of the most visionary and eloquent sessions of its day. Source: concordmusicgroup.com
