Four CDs. Fumble were by far the classiest of the rock'n'roll revival bands operating during the Seventies, recording extensively in their own right as well as touring with Bill Haley and Fats Domino, backing Chuck Berry and appearing in both the London show Elvis: The Musical and Jack Good's revival of the legendary Oh Boy!None of their rivals had original material of the caliber of "Free The Kids" or "Marilyn", and none of their fellow retro-rockers possessed the imagination or artistic self-confidence to come up with such radical revamps of classic R&B/rock tunes as their incendiary version of 'Not Fade Away'. Not Fade Away: The Complete Recordings 1964-1982 does exactly what it says on the tin. It features all of the band's recordings, including their three studio albums, beginning with their self-titled 1972 debut set (housed in a memorable Hipgnosis sleeve) and the superb follow-up 'Poetry In Lotion', which featured a handful of superior original songs alongside the vintage covers. In addition, we include the 'Rumble With Fumble' live LP as well as a number of previously unreleased studio outtakes, alternative versions, a BBC radio session and even eight pre-Fumble recordings from their time as mid-Sixties garage beat/R&B group The Iveys.

Altoist Paul Desmond and baritonist Gerry Mulligan always made for a perfect team during their infrequent collaborations. Both of the saxophonists had immediately distinctive light tones, strong wits, and the ability to improvise melodically. Here the two masterful reed players are featured in pianoless quartets that also include Wendell Marshall, Joe Benjamin or John Beal on bass, and Connie Kay or Mel Lewis on drums. The songs all utilize common chord changes, including the two "originals" ("Two of a Mind" and "Blight of the Fumble Bee"), and the interplay between Desmond and Mulligan is consistently delightful. Highly recommended.

The sophomore album from Simon Jeffes' homegrown band took over three years to record, but the signs are here that it was a labor of love. While drawing compositional and textural inspiration from both English folk and chamber music, it manages to sound like neither and a wondrous hybrid of both…

UK three CD collection. At the dawn of the '70s, British rock bands were either on the road, playing to the adoring masses or fooling around in hotel rooms with groupies and mud-sharks, or holed up for months on end recording their latest triple-album sets for stoned student hairies. But while their older brothers were getting it off on that revolution stuff, young teens in the UK were glued to pop radio (which, prior to commercial stations opening in 1973, effectively meant Radio One and Luxembourg) as the backroom boys of the traditional pop industry assumed total control of the airwaves. Shining a searchlight on the lost and often murky world of early '70s British pop, Bubblerock Is Here To Stay! Crams 85 sub-three minute nuggets into four hours of innocent, hook-laden fun as we focus on the faceless studio creations, ubiquitous session musicians and carefully nurtured pop idols as they battled for the hearts, minds and pocket money of the nation's pop kids. Boasting a 40-page booklet featuring track-by-track annotation, quotes, anecdotes and numerous rare illustrations, Bubblerock Is Here To Stay! Celebrates the uncelebrated to provide another essential instalment in Grapefruit's much-acclaimed series of genre boxes.

Tucson's musical savant Howe Gelb has released an album of mostly instrumental keyboard music, Ogle Some Piano. It's a curious disc, even by Gelb's eccentric standards – nineteen tracks of piano meanderings in a variety of styles: jazz, rock, pop, tin pan alley and experimental avant-garde weirdness. And the titles seem a parody of art-rock pretentiousness: "Spangle Bib of Radiant Value," "Hammered and Hampered, We Then Took the Deeds Down by the Dozen," and "Someday They Will Have a Name for What Ails You as Opposed to Being Saddled with Speck Elation" are representative. The best tracks include Joey Burns on double bass and John Convertino on drums, making these tracks more or less Giant Sand pieces. There are also contributions from the usual suspects, including Nick Luca and Craig Schumacher of Wave Lab studios in Tucson, and the late great Rainer Ptacek as well.
