Time waits for no one…right? While times and tastes change, every so often a group fine tunes a durable mix of musical firepower and showbiz glitz and manages to defy the years. This first call, horn section-turned-band, has solved the aging issue with a practical formula: get in a groove, write punchy horn charts, consistently whip up a high-energy funk revue where the jams blend together and viola, you have a band that is now celebrating the almost unheard-of milestone of a half century together! Tower of Power has a tradition of marking every passing decade with a live album and for their 50th anniversary in 2018 they brought the house—17 musicians and a full string section—to the Fox Theater in their original stomping ground of Oakland, CA, and filmed and recorded over 20 tracks in front of a partisan crowd that sounds appropriately stoked.

The first of what's promised to be many trips into Huey P. Meaux's deep vaults, Ace's 2013 compilation South Texas Rhythm 'N' Soul Revue is an unfettered delight, collecting 24 sides released on the Jet Stream, Tear Drop, Eric, Cascade, Pacemaker, Boogaloo, and Trinity imprints between 1962 and 1973, adding three previously unissued numbers for good measure. Hits aren't the name of the game here, nor are there too many household names: Big Walter Price (not Big Walter Horton), Johnny Adams, Johnny Copeland, and Barbara Lynn (the latter represented with a demo of "You'll Lose a Good Thing") are the names that could possibly spark recognition, but even these are better-known by aficionados, not trainspotters.

Starting in 1962, Berry Gordy decided the best way to market his artists was to take them on the road, and for four years (1962-1965 and 1969), the label issued live Motortown Revue albums to capture the excitement. Except for the 1969 edition, none of these have been on CD, and they appear here with an awesome booklet featuring original artist bios and photos from the tour programs! Hear Smokey Robinson, the Temptations, Stevie Wonder, Supremes, Marvin Gaye, Martha & the Vandellas and more limited edition of 5000!

"Old school." There’s something about that term that sums up what’s great about the classic ’60s and ’70s funk and soul jams. It has stood the test of time, and there’s still no better music for getting a party started and keeping people grooving through the night.

Yacht Rock Revue's first original record, Hot Dads in Tight Jeans, aptly embodies the band in both title and in essence. An album of ten songs inspired by the smoooooth sounds of the Seventies and Eighties, Hot Dads in Tight Jeans is as plush and shiny as Kenny Loggins' beard. Produced by Ben Allen (Animal Collective, Kaiser Chiefs, Gnarls Barkley), it returns Yacht Rock Revue to their roots in original music while paying homage to the genre that granted them esteem in a fresh, modern way.

The New Birth revue's (the Nite-Liters and Love Peace & Happiness) potential went practically unfulfilled in the grand scheme of music. Talented and equipped with soulful vocalists such as the Wilson brothers (Leslie and Melvin), Londee Loren, Alan Frey, and Anne Bogan (who not only participated on some New Birth recordings, but also with Leslie and Melvin Wilson as Love Peace & Happiness, who recorded two RCA albums), the world should have been theirs for the taking. This compilation lives up to its name and is primarily funky. Culled from recordings by New Birth, the Nite-Liters, and Love Peace & Happiness, these are 18 gutbucket funky soul numbers. Tracks of note: "Con-Funk-Shun," whose title was adopted by another funk band; a gritty remake (even grittier than Bobby Womack's) of "I Can Understand It"; "Theme From Buck and the Preacher"; "Granddaddy"; "I'm Back"; and "Lonely Room" from Love Peace & Happiness' Love Is Stronger album. The most obvious omits are the plums: "It's Been Such a Long Time," "Wildflower," "Dream Merchant," and "It's Impossible." Even so, Greatest Funk Classics is a straight-up winner.

The R&B, soul and boogaloo sounds that make up the singles recorded by James Brown’s right-hand man. Together on CD for the first time. Without Bobby Byrd there would have been no James Brown, whose whole career stems from the moment he crashed into Byrd at a community baseball match in Toccoa, Georgia in 1953. Brown was an inmate of the Alto Reform School, a converted National Guard Armoury in the north of the state. Byrd’s family helped secure Brown’s release, and Byrd then let the youngster join his vocal group.

Throughout the '60s and into the '70s, it's apparent that Ru-Jac was intent on keeping its finger on the pulse of contemporary R&B;, to the point of mimicking current acts that were enjoying mainstream popularity. I can't pretend that the artists known as Gene & Eddie weren't an attempt to create another Sam & Dave, and the tight funk of their single "I Tell You" is a wonderful track, but an almost overly obvious nod to Stax's legendary duo. Likewise, Winfield Parker's "She's So Pretty" (from Volume 4) is a fantastic dancefloor stomper obviously inspired by Wilson Pickett singles like "Land of 1,000 Dances".

"Sometimes, all it takes is one man to recognize a city's potential for an industry. In Indianapolis, that man was Herb Miller, and his business was soul and funk. He came to prominence long after Indy's allure as a jazz destination waned. He founded LAMP Records in the late 1960s to wake Naptown from its musical slumber. Miller served a critical role in city's burgeoning soul and funk scene, providing not only financial backing, but acting as a one-stop, record-making shop for artists that had, to that point, been doing it all themselves. He's the Berry Gordy you've never heard of. His roster – national acts like the Vanguards and Ebony Rhythm Band alongside talented, regional acts such as the Moonlighters, Montiques, Pearls and the Words of Wisdom Truth Revue – rivaled that of any American independent and paved the way for the ascension of 80s and 90s hitmakers Kenneth 'Babyface' Edmonds and Antonio 'L.A.' Reid, both of whom cut their teeth with LAMP alumnus."
