Pelican Blood tells the story of Nikko, a funny but left-of-center young man living in London. Following a disastrous break up with his girlfriend, Stevie, he's taking life one day at a time, throwing all his energy into his hobby: bird spotting Just as life becomes bearable, Stevie arrives back on the scene, causing a rift between Nikko and all his friends, who warn him she will destroy him. They are fully aware of how the couple first met: on a suicide website, pledging they will 'end it all together'. As their intense, disturbing and highly sexual connection resumes, the relationship between Nikko, Stevie, his friends and his hobby are thrown into questionable chaos. Romantic ballads were Carmen McRae's specialty, and her streetwise yet sophisticated phrasing carried just enough world-weariness to suggest that she actually understood what she was singing about (being in love or having been in love doesn't automatically mean you can convincingly sing about it – McRae could, though). This collection of mid- to late-'50s material for Decca Records doubles both as a collection of love songs and as a fine introduction to the singer in her early years – when she still had full control of her upper vocal register.

Stephen Hartke is widely recognised as one of the leading composers of his generation. His individual voice is marked by a sense for melody and colour that follows in the tradition of Bartók and Messiaen. This collection offers the listener different sides of Hartke’s chamber music performed by one of America’s premiere chamber ensembles, the Los Angeles Piano Quartet. The surreal trio The Horse with the Lavender Eye of 1997 and the four selections from Post-modern Homages for solo piano here receive their premiere recording. The Sonata is a vivid three-movement work for solo piano while The King of the Sun, written for the Los Angeles Piano Quartet, takes its inspiration from paintings by Miró.
