Хофштадтер, ученый-универсал и специалист в области когнитивных наук и кибернетики, использует в ней имена Гёделя, Эшера и Баха для иллюстрации целого ряда проблем семантики, теории систем, искусственного интеллекта, математики и логики, лингвистики, теории сознания. В конечном итоге, как пишет Хофштадтер, вопрос этой книги в том, что такое «я».
