Let's get one thing straight right off the bat – Great American Taxi is not a jam band. It's not too hard to understand how their particular brand of open-hearted Americana has found an audience in that milieu, and maybe they stretch out while swapping solos on-stage, but there's no loosey-goosey jamming whatsoever on Reckless Habits, nor is there the amorphous, there's-a-song-in-there-somewhere approach to composition too frequently taken by jam bands.
Guess I don't need to introduce these two legends if you are following my releases of them in a while. However, let me repeat 'Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia' and 'Dr. Balamurali Krishna' are two of the greatest doyens of their traditions. And in many aspects, this Jugalbandi Live in Hong Kong is one of the greatest moments of Indian Classical.
Although Sitar and Sarangi are prominent Indian Classical instruments, they encountered very rarely in Jugalbandi/duet setup. So, this concert album is a rare and great treat for those who have an enthusiastic ears for Indian Classical music. Ustad Rais Khan & Ustad Sultan Khan are not only very esteemed musicians but are noted for an outstanding capability for Jugalbandi performances. In this Live in London concert accompanied by much soughtafter tabla player Pandit Anindo Chatterjee, It captured their great and detailed skills of musicianship which took them to new heights in their fields. The volume 1 is completely devoted to Raga Yaman Kalyan, an evening raga and performed in detailed Alap, Slow and Fast Teentaals. The second volume consists of Ragamala (A Garland Of Various Ragas) based around Raga Khamaj and the concert ends with bewitching Medium Tempo Teentaal in Raga Bhairavi. IMO, An outstanding and a rare Jugalbandi. Highly Recommended.
Here at last is the definitive Ravi Shankar Collection - ten discs covering 40 years of the master's recordings for EMI. This set includes collaborations with such luminaries as Ali Akbar Khan, Yehudi Menuhin, Jean-Pierre Rampal, and a host of other musicians both east and west. Besides the ten discs, there is a 27 page booklet (English, German, French) and exclusive access to a website with additional audio and video content. If you are familiar with Ravi Shankar, there is little I can say beyond the fact that the discs are exquisitely mastered, generously full, and contain a tremendous wealth of performances from an incomparable career. And If you have not yet heard the music of Ravi Shankar - one of the greatest improvisational musicians of this, or any other age - this is your opportunity to enter into a musical experience that goes beyond hearing, beyond words, resonating deep into the depths of the infinite soul.
