Music Box Records is very proud to announce the release of L’Incorrigible / The Incorrigible (1975), directed by Philippe de Broca (a long-time collaboration over 30 years) and Va voir maman, papa travaille / Your turn, my turn (1978) directed by François Leterrier. These two soundtracks are available for the first time on CD in expanded editions with a new sequencing and a new sound mixing. The scores written for the movies of Philippe de Broca, whose qualities were long unknown to cinema enthusiasts and even to amateurs of the music of Georges Delerue, always oscillate between irony and tenderness. The score of L'Incorrigible is light, always ironic, never redundant with the image. The music for small orchestra takes tones sometimes of a detective movie, sometimes Andalusian, sometimes bucolic. A piano version of the love theme Tendre Marie-Charlotte played by Georges Delerue is included in this release. The music of Va voir maman, papa travaille (directed by François Leterrier) contains a romantic “modal color” characteristic of the work of Georges Delerue during the same period. This score is enhanced with several “pop-rock” pieces which sends back to what Georges Garvarentz, Michel Magne, Michel Colombier or François de Roubaix would produce at the same period. For Va voir maman, papa travaille, the CD offers a complete 30-minute score.

A unique film deserves a unique score. The famous song from “The Longest Day” was written and composed by Paul Anka. The rest of the score was composed, arranged, and orchestrated by Maurice Jarre. It was the minimum needed for this super production, which is considered as one of the most brilliant tributes to the freedom soldiers! In addition to “The Longest Day”’s score are featured the World War II cinema classics’ soundtracks: Denys de la Patellière’s “Un Taxi Pour Tobrouk” composed by Georges Garvarentz, René Clément’s “Is Paris Burning?” composed by Maurice Jarre, René Clément’s “La Bataille du Rail” composed by Yves Baudrier, René Clément’s “Mr. Orchid composed by René Cloërec, and René Clément’s “Forbidden Games” composed by Narciso Yepes.

The French know and love their movies like no one else in Europe, so it's no surprise that they've produced a few top-notch film composers over the years. The folks at Crippled Dick Hot Wax, the German label that has unearthed all manner of offbeat film music, pay homage to a little-acknowledged side of French movie scoring with Shake Sauvage, a disc featuring cues from 15 different Gallic films released between 1968 and 1973 (with a bit of funky library stock music and one retro-styled cut from the '80s rounding out the track listing). On Shake Sauvage, the focus is on French music that seemingly channels hipper American sounds of the day, from the cool jazz-funk of Claude Bolling's "Full Speed" and the naïve neo-psychedelia of Roland Vincent's "LSD Party" (complete with some of the least fluid wah-wah guitar ever recorded) to the ominous spy movie sounds of George Garvarentz's "Les Temps des Loups," and the lush, seductive organ groove of Jean-Pierre Mirouze's "Sexopolis." Actually, lush organ is one of the dominant themes of this disc (Brian Auger appears on several tracks) along with a pervasive fondness for American pop music filtered through the lens of classic-era European cool.
