The National University Library in Turin houses several extremely important musical collections. Among these are those of Mauro Foa and Renzo Giordano, containing over 450 manuscripts of Vivaldi, many of them autographs. With the purpose of exploring this immense heritage and bringing to life many unpublished works, the Instituto per i Beni Musicali in Piemonte and Naïve [Opus 111] with the collaboration of the Library in Turin, have undertaken to record a complete edition on CD of Vivaldi scores held in Turin.

Rinaldo (HWV 7) is an Italian opera by George Frideric Handel, now a part of the standard operatic repertoire. The Italian libretto was written by Giacomo Rossi based on episodes of Torquato Tasso's Gerusalemme liberata ("Jerusalem Delivered"). It is a heroic story of battle and love set in the time of the First Crusade (1096–1099).

For several decades, as solo harpsichordist and director of his ensemble Concerto Italiano, Rinaldo Alessandrini has been exploring not just the Italian repertoire that he is so passionate about but also the works of Bach - as in his benchmark recording of the Brandenburg Concertos in 2005. In this new recording, Alessandrini has mounted a challenge to all currently available recordings of those four Orchestral Suites that Bach called ‘Overtures’, after their imposing opening movements. It’s uncertain when these dance suites were composed or where they were first performed but they were certainly played in Leipzig at the time Bach was directing its celebrated Collegium Musicum.

Johann Sebastian Bach's sonatas for viola da gamba and obbligato harpsichord belong to those central works of the gamba repertory with which every generation, every ambitious player, must come to terms anew. Their technical demands and compositional complexity make the sonatas' interpretation a delicate task and, at the same time, a major challenge.

“This eighteenth-century premonition of The Mikado is a delight…The cast is good, though there's only one star: Anna Maria Panzarella (Agnesina) does the tomboy thing terribly well and as she falls in love it's not just her costumes and the music which become more feminine, it's also her acting and singing…'L'inimico delle donne is very simply filmed…You really feel you are there. And it's where I want to be. A delight from start to finish.”

Giovanni Palestrina is one of the giants of late Renaissance music. Probably better known for his religious works he also composed a large number of madrigals. In this genre he may not have been the innovator he was for the church. Nevertheless – or maybe even because of this – his madrigals were much appreciated and (re)printed at the time. This is a recording of the first book of madrigals by Palestrina. They are set for four voices despite the contemporary fashion to employ five parts. Though based in Rome and heavily involved with the church the subject of these madrigals is the usual one: love. Fine lively performances by the singers of Concerto Italiano. With lute accompaniment by Andrea Damiani.

Now it's working fine!

The dichotomy that characterises Louis Couperin’s output for harpsichord is not merely formal in nature. On the one hand, préludes non mesurés; on the other, dance movements: the former are essentially innovative, while the latter continue a typically French tradition.
