With the ever-rising volume worldwide of visual content on computers and communication networks, it becomes increasingly important to understand visual processing, to model and evaluate image formation, and to attempt to interpret image content.

Geometry used to be the basis of a mathematical education; today it is not even a standard undergraduate topic. Much as I deplore this situation, I welcome the opportunity to make a fresh start. Classical geometry is no longer an adequate basis for mathematics or physics-both of which are becoming increasingly geometric-and geometry can no longer be divorced from algebra, topology, and analysis.

It was also agreed that the course should be given in as simple and concrete a language as possible, and that wherever practic­ able the terminology should be that used by physicists. Thus it was along these lines that the archetypal course was taught. It was given more permanent form as duplicated lecture notes published under the auspices of Moscow State University as: Differential Geometry, Parts I and II, by S. P. Novikov, Division of Mechanics, Moscow State University, 1972. Subsequently various parts of the course were altered, and new topics added. This supplementary material was published (also in duplicated form) as Differential Geometry, Part III, by S. P. Novikov and A. T. Fomenko, Division of Mechanics, Moscow State University, 1974. The present book is the outcome of a reworking, re-ordering, and ex­ tensive elaboration of the above-mentioned lecture notes. It is the authors' view that it will serve as a basic text from which the essentials for a course in modern geometry may be easily extracted. To S. P. Novikov are due the original conception and the overall plan of the book. The work of organizing the material contained in the duplicated lecture notes in accordance with this plan was carried out by B. A. Dubrovin.

this book is a classic on the foundations of quantum theory. It examines the subject from a point of view that goes back to Heisenberg and Dirac, and whose definitive mathematical formulation is due to von Neumann. This view, which is essentially geometric and relies on the concept of symmetry, leads most naturally to the fundamental questions that are the basis of all attempts to understand the world of atomic and subatomic particles. The mathematical treatment of symmetry in quantum theory is based on the theory of group representations, and this book includes a self-contained treatment of the parts of this theory that are most useful in quantum physics.

The present work is the first volume of a substantially enlarged version of the mimeographed notes of a course of lectures first given by me in the Indian Statistical Institute, Calcutta, India, during 1964-65. When it was suggested that these lectures be developed into a book, I readily agreed and took the opportunity to extend the scope of the material covered. No background in physics is in principle necessary for understand­ ing the essential ideas in this work. However, a high degree of mathematical maturity is certainly indispensable.

This updated and expanded edition presents a highly accurate specification for part surface machining. Precise specification reduces the cost of this widely used industrial operation as accurately specified and machined part surfaces do not need to undergo costly final finishing. Dr. Radzevich describes techniques in this volume based primarily on classical differential geometry of surfaces.

Of all the many types of machine elements which exist today, gears are among the most commonly used. The basic idea of a wheel with teeth is extremely simple, and dates back several thousand years. It is obvious to any observer that one gear drives another by means of the meshing teeth, and to the person who has never studied gears, it might seem that no further explanation is required. It may therefore come as a surprise to discover the large quantity of geometric theory that exists on the subject of gears, and to find that there is probably no branch of mechanical engineering where theory and practice are more closely linked.
