George Bataille

The transgressive writing of George Bataille (1897-1962) and the rigorous ethical philosophy of social activist and Christian mystic Simone Weil (1909-1943) seem to belong to different worlds. Yet in the political ferment of 1930s Paris, Bataille and Weil were intellectual adversaries who exerted a powerful fascination on each other.

This provocative book re-conceives the erotic and its imaginative manifestations as an aesthetic ultimately driven by the disruption of desire. Critical, philosophical, and erotic texts construct a framework for understanding the aesthetics of eroticism including a «resisting nude» grounded in a theory of absence and the psychosocial dynamic of physical and mental surveillance. Resisting Nudities offers a necessary link between the poetry of jouissance and the revolt of body and mind intrinsic to the erotic, at a key moment in our contemporary cultural landscape. Il dispendio improduttivo, la parte maledetta, la sovranità, l’energia, il sacro, l’intimità perduta, la continuità: sono alcune delle nozioni chiave della sociologia di George Bataille per indicare un movimento preliminare dell’esistenza, sia a livello individuale che collettivo, che perdura nelle pieghe della modernità, che la costituisce, di cui si serve anche quando si ostina a estrometterla dai suoi ideali di perfettibilità. L’eterologia, la scienza dei corpi estranei o degli elementi eterogenei, allo stato di abbozzo nella sua elaborazione, conclusa anche se frammentata dall’inventario degli oggetti e dei metodi di apprensione, doveva costituire per Bataille l’opera principale di una coscienza in cerca di chiarezza nei confronti dei fatti umani, libera da ogni tipo di servilismo o di subordinazione.
