George Town Project

Jack Johnson accepted the challenge of writing a collection of children's songs to accompany the animated film version of Curious George released in 2006. The resulting soundtrack album went to number one in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand and became a US million seller. Since Curious George doesn't speak in the movie, the monkey's voice is only heard through Johnson's songs. This required Johnson to research the perspective of an inquisitive monkey. After reading the screenplay, he studied sketches of Curious George until the music came to him. Guests include Ben Harper, G. Love and Matt Costa.

Titling her newest record "The Laziest Girl in Town" may seem ironic for vocalist and new mom Elizabeth McQueen. For the past year and a half McQueen has been the very opposite of lazy - raising the newest addition to her family, Lisel Blossom Sanger McQueen, on the road while touring the country with the Grammy Award winning band Asleep at the Wheel. It was this experience that inspired McQueen to conceive and create her newest record – one that explores the beauty of imperfection, and the immediacy of emotion. “When you’re logging in thousands of miles with a baby in tow, you learn to let go of the need to get everything right and you come to appreciate all that life throws at you. I wanted to see if I could have that same attitude in the studio.”

Mike Seeger, along with his wife Alexia Smith and filmmaker Yasha Aginsky, trekked through the Appalachian Mountains in 2009 to produce this extraordinary glimpse of the vigor and diversity of the region’s old-time banjo artistry. When Seeger passed away later that same year, the project took on the added importance of paying tribute to this renowned musician, folklorist, and documentarian of the people.

The Soulful Strings were without a doubt the hippest project ever to emerge from the 60s with the word Strings in its name. Brainchild of producer/arranger/bassist/songwriter (and genius) Richard Evans, the group was a far cry from the interchangeable outfits that flourished during the beautiful music era; instead, The Soulful Strings were actually composed of members of the Chess/Cadet label house band, including flautist Lennie Druss, guitarist Phil Upchurch, bassist/cellist Cleveland Eaton and harpist Dorothy Ashby, who laid down a tasty electric groove into which Evans stirred lush strings and unusual instrumentation like the kalimba and sitar. The result was a sound that resided at the crossroads of easy listening, jazz, R&B and exotica and, as one might expect from that description, every Soulful Strings release (they made seven albums) is treasured by cratediggers worldwide. This 1968 release was their highest-charting record at #35 on the charts, and appears on CD for the first time anywhere in the world, with liner notes by Gene Sculatti.
