As in her first Callas à Paris recital, recorded two years previously, the diva performs arias of diverse weight, colour and mood - from the darker tones of Berlioz's Marguerite to the brilliant 'Jewel Song' of Gounod's Marguerite, and from the mezzo-ish melancholy of Massenet's Charlotte to the soprano coquetry of the same composer's Manon. 'Simply as an artist,' wrote Gramophone in its review of the recital, 'in her sense of line, her feeling for a word, her command of colour and her mastery of the whole complex art of interpretation - [Callas] is so far ahead of all other contemporary singers, and of all but the greatest past singers, too, that she almost spoils us for the rest.'

Callas never sang a role in French on stage, though she had studied French repertoire as a student and one of her most famous roles, Cherubini’s Medea, had originally been written in French as Médée. From the early 1960s she made her home in Paris, where in 1961 she recorded this recital of French-language arias for both soprano and mezzo-soprano, composed in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.

The pearl of great price: the German tenor who could make you wish to retract all you ever thought, wrote or spoke about the species, the Mozart tenor who could sound both elegant and manly, the singer who could almost persuade you that Strauss loved the tenor voice as he did the soprano. We hear Wunderlich in this collection additionally as Rossini’s Almaviva, scrupulous with his triplets and almost as careful with his scales. His “Il mio tesoro” drops not a semiquaver and takes the long phrases with confident ease.

Claude-Achille Debussy (August 22, 1862 – March 25, 1918) was a French composer. Along with Maurice Ravel, he was one of the most prominent figures working within the field of impressionist music, though he himself intensely disliked the term when applied to his compositions. André Caplet (November 23, 1878 – April 22, 1925) was a French composer and conductor now known primarily through his orchestrations of works by Claude Debussy. Florent Schmitt (September 28, 1870 – August 17, 1958) was a French composer; he studied with Gabriel Fauré, Jules Massenet, Théodore Dubois, and Albert Lavignac and in 1900 he won the Prix de Rome.

Callas’s only operatic appearances in Germany were Lucia di Lammermoor, with Karajan conducting, in Berlin in 1955, and La sonnambula in Cologne in 1957, but in both 1959 and 1962 she made concert tours of the country, visiting Hamburg twice. The video recordings of her concerts in the city showcase her in a dazzling variety of Italian and French repertoire for both soprano and mezzo-soprano: three consisting Verdi roles (Lady Macbeth, Elvira from Ernani and Elisabetta from Don Carlo); Imogene from Bellini’s Il pirate; Giulia from La vestale; Chimѐne from Massenet’s Le Cid; Verdi’s most explosively dramatic aria for mezzo-soprano—Eboli’s ‘O don fatale’ from Don Carlo; Carmen’s seductive Habanera and Séguedille and, from Rossini’s La Cenerentola, Angelina’s final rondo, which magically combines modest charm and sparkling virtuosity.
