Returning to the large ensemble sound of her 2005 success, Christmas Songs, pianist/vocalist Diana Krall delivers a superb performance on 2006's From This Moment On. Although having received a largely positive critical response for her creative departure into original singer/songwriter jazz material on 2004's The Girl in the Other Room, here listeners find Krall diving headlong into the Great American Songbook that has long been her bread and butter. While she's always been a pleasant presence on album, Krall has developed from a talented pianist who can sing nicely into an engaging, classy, and sultry vocalist with tastefully deft improvisational chops.

Spirituality has always been at the center of Charles Lloyd's music. The other constant in the octogenarian saxophonist's work is his ability to stretch. Over his career, he's played blues and rock, had funky moments, and, of course, ranged across much of the jazz spectrum. He's added his horn to recordings and live performances by Cannonball Adderley, Joe Sample, The Beach Boys and The Doors. In 1973, after being influenced by the zeitgeist of Indian musicians Ravi Shankar and Alla Rakha, Lloyd recorded Geeta, an album that mixed his brand of improvisational free jazz with traditional Indian music.

Following two albums with a reconstituted L.A. Express, Bluestreak and Smokin' Section, Tom Scott returns to solo frontman duties on his Higher Octave Jazz debut, New Found Freedom, but he does so with a large number of guests. Those guests help broaden the styles of music available on the release, although Scott's own saxophone work remains a touchstone and everything on the disc will be easily programmable on smooth jazz radio. Indeed, the variety gives programmers many choices. Craig Chaquico, a fellow veteran of the 1970s rock scene and now a labelmate, joins Scott with some characteristic acoustic guitar work on the becalmed opener, "Feelin' It," after which adult contemporary singer Ann Nesby croons "You Are My Everything" while Billy Preston joins in on organ.
