Gershwin s Rhapsody in Blue is one of the most successful fusions of classical music and jazz ever, and is one of the most popular of all American concert works. Gershwin described the piece, which opens with an unforgettable two-and-a-half octave glissando wail on the clarinet, as a sort of musical kaleidoscope of America, of our vast melting pot… … our metropolitan madness.

Freddy Kempf and Andrew Litton with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra here join forces to present a disc of works by George Gershwin. Rhapsody in Blue was originally arranged by Ferde Grofé for jazz band before being orchestrated for symphony orchestra. Here Kempf and the Bergen Philharmonic play this original version. Concerto in F was a commission for Gershwin to write a ‘proper’ piano concerto, but still takes the rhythms, melodic structures and bluesy harmonies of popular music.

The popularity of George Gershwin's piano music with audiences and performers, large to begin with, has only grown in the years since 1990, and distinctive new recordings have been appearing frequently. Here's one covering all the music for piano and orchestra, which is an effective way to trace the development of Gershwin's music within a single genre.

Info for Gershwin: Rhapsody in Blue - Strike Up the Band: Overture - Promenade - Catfish Row (Remaster 2015)
George Gershwin fired up the New York music scene with his mélange of alluring tunes and refinement of the jazz vibe. His Strike up the Band Overture opened a flashy broadway hit and, inspired by a train ride, the composer heard his masterpiece Rhapsody in Blue as a “musical kaleidoscope of America”. Promenade was reconstructed from a 1937 film score, and Catfish Row was Gershwin’s concert suite from the opera Porgy and Bess. Acclaimed as a “bold, gutsy performance with plenty of pizzazz” and with “impressive brilliance and depth”.

James Levine's long and distinguished asociation with Deutsche Grammophon is no more fittingly celebrated then on this dazzling CD of favorite works by George Gershwin, where the conductor is also soloist in Rhapsody In Blue in its original jazz band arrangement by Ferde Grofe. The Chicago Symphony provides the authentic orchestral sound.

My promo will point to the Gershwin part of this CD only, because for that part I bought this CD actually. Having this Gershwin part in the same performance on Decca Phase 4 vinyl for many decades, but spoiled by the comfortness of the CD, I considered it worthwhile to buy it.

Gershwin and Stanley Black, what a beautiful and perfect match! Both were virtuosos. The performance of Mr. Black is nothing less than spectacular. The purity of sound on this CD is enhanced by the Phase 4 Stereo and of course by the quality of the musicians of the London Festival Orchestra surrounding Mr. Black. The opening of Rhapsody in Blue with a clarinet solo is particularly breathtaking and sets the tone for this remarkable Gershwin recordings.

This is one of the best recordings I've heard of Gershwin's two big piano works. Eugene List is just phenomenal. He plays with a big, steely sound, but has plenty of feeling for the jazzy accents of both works. I can't praise Howard Hanson's contribution enough. The orchestra simply speaks Gershwin, in a manner that only a great conductor who absorbed this music and the influences on it in his youth could bring off. Hearing Hanson conduct Gershwin is like hearing Serafin conduct Verdi, so complete is the identification with the composer. The sound engineering is some of the best Mercury produced in Rochester, wide ranging with plenty of detail. I do question what Stars and Stripes is doing here, although it is a good performance with a student orchestra. Nevertheless, this is essential listening for the Gershwinaholic, as iconic in its way as Oscar Levant's performances.
