Véritable électron libre inclassable, ce chef d’orchestre et champion de la musique de son temps a bousculé les habitudes et défrayé la chronique par ses prises de position politiques et musicales hors de la routine et des idées communes. Son rôle fut déterminant pour le développement et la propagation de la musique d’avant-garde dodécaphonique et électroacoustique. Né à Berlin en 1891, Hermann Scherchen est un autodidacte dont l’instinct musical est très développé. Très jeune, à 16 ans, il est altiste de l’orchestre Blüthner avant d’entrer au Philharmonique de Berlin jusqu’à sa rencontre avec Arnold Schönberg, auprès duquel il fait ses premières armes de chef d’orchestre lors des répétitions du Pierrot lunaire en 1912.

Perhaps no single musician ever achieved such high accomplishment across such a broad span of repertory as Nikolaus Harnoncourt. His first professional job was as cellist for the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. Almost immediately, however, Harnoncourt sought to specialize in performing music of the past upon historically correct instruments; he was one of the first professional musicians to do so.

Seiji Ozawa, born of Japanese parents in Manchuria, began music lessons at the age of seven. At 16 he entered the Toho School of Music in Tokyo, intending to pursue a career as a professional pianist. He abandoned that plan after breaking both of his index fingers in a rugby game. It was then that he turned to conducting and composition. While still a student Ozawa gained podium experience with professional ensembles, including the NHK Symphony Orchestra and the Japan Philharmonic. He graduated in 1959 with first prizes in conducting and composition and traveled to Europe to pursue further studies.
