Style: Psychedelic Rock, Blues Rock, Progressive Rock | Label: Listenable Records

They're a monstrous rock n roll power trio with three lead singers and a dazzling classic touch. The group effortlessly draws their influence from the greatest musical ideas from when Rock Ruled The World; it's as if they truly ARE from that Golden era. But their gift to us in The Now, and it is an epic, soulful, and hard-hitting maelstrom of feel-good, anthemic and tough swinging sounds. When you listen to THE GOLDEN GRASS, it's no surprise feel as if you're at The UFO Club, or watching Germany's Beat Club or at the legendary Fillmore East because these boys transport you to that PLACE and TIME, earnestly, truthfully, and with a style and flare wholly their own. It's all in there too; the throbbing shuffle of the Blues, the deep haze of wild Psychedelia, the American flavored Southern Rock, the mind-warping fantasy of early Progressive/Jazz Rock, the pulsating British Freakbeat/Mod sound, heavy doses of Proto-metal power, and the funky/soulful touch of Northern Soul to seal the deal. Is this really possible ? Could a band really BE this? Well on their newest and most astonishing album, insistently titled "Absolutely", you'll be the one to find out! Go on now, drink from the Golden cup of life and bathe in sonic goodness. THE GOLDEN GRASS is playing your song.

Like his compatriot and close contemporary Abdullah Ibrahim, Hugh Masekela has a 24-carat discography which stretches back six decades and digs deep into the taproot of jazz. Ibrahim is still with us—he has a new album scheduled for June 2019—but Masekela passed in January 2018. Among the several solid Masekela compilations on the market, this 3-CD set is the most welcome. It deals with the most prolific phase of Masekela's career and brings back into circulation material from landmark albums which have either never been reissued or which were last reissued twenty or thirty years ago. Two of the most important albums—Introducing Hedzolleh Soundz (Chisa/Blue Thumb, 1973) and I Am Not Afraid (Chisa/Blue Thumb, 1974)—are included in their entirety. If Masekela '66—'76 did no more than make these titles available again it would justify its existence. But it does much more.

Six buildings in close proximity with families living one on top of another within a constant melee of sound, including music of all sorts. This is the public housing of Santiago de Cuba, known locally as cuartería. These apartments and their confederation of people and sounds serve as the inspiration to saxophonist and composer Román Filiú’s new musical suite and subsequent recording, Quarteria.

At long last, Rausch release their second full-length album; "Book II". Heavy-hitting contributions come from the likes of Mark Zonder (Fates Warning), Ryo Okumoto (Spock's Beard) and second Shadow Gallery mainstay, guitarist Brendt Allman. Picking up where the debut left off, it remains painfully vulnerable and autobiographical of the band's trials and tribulations along the way…

Throughout the '60s and into the '70s, it's apparent that Ru-Jac was intent on keeping its finger on the pulse of contemporary R&B;, to the point of mimicking current acts that were enjoying mainstream popularity. I can't pretend that the artists known as Gene & Eddie weren't an attempt to create another Sam & Dave, and the tight funk of their single "I Tell You" is a wonderful track, but an almost overly obvious nod to Stax's legendary duo. Likewise, Winfield Parker's "She's So Pretty" (from Volume 4) is a fantastic dancefloor stomper obviously inspired by Wilson Pickett singles like "Land of 1,000 Dances".

Omnivore's second installment of Buck Owens' The Complete Capitol Singles opens up with "Sam's Place," the song Buck took to number one early in 1967, and closes with "I Wouldn't Live in New York City (If They Gave Me the Whole Dang Town)," which peaked at nine in late 1970. In other words, this double-disc compilation traces the waning years of Buck's imperial era, ending at a point when he's still having hits but starting to have diminishing creative returns. While there are a couple of bum sides to be heard in these 36 tracks usually, they arrive in the form of duets with his son Buddy Alan or a half-baked B-side the consistency of these singles remains remarkable, as do the chances Owens takes.

'Seasons Of Change II: More Happening Hits Of The Hippy Era' is the much-anticipated sequel to the original instalment released a couple of years ago. This second volume once again plugs into the 'vibe' and musical mood of that late-60s/early-70s period - focusing on those tracks that became local charts hits, and album cuts that received lots of radio airplay during those heady years.
