This feature-length film was shot during the Grateful Dead's so-called "retirement run" of shows at Winterland Arena in San Francisco during mid-October 1974 after which the band was to take an extended sabbatical from touring North America. Under the direction of the band's lead guitarist, Jerry Garcia, and cinematographer, Leon Gast, The Grateful Dead Movie is equal measures of cinematic rockumentary and concert film much in the same vein as Woodstock or Monterey Pop.

The other night I rented the movie Zodiac and watched it for the first time. Having missed it during its theatrical run, I had looked forward to watching it for some time. So anyway, one of the first things I picked up on about the movie was its very inventive use of the music from the same time period the gruesome serial murders occured in Northern California — stuff like Donovan's "Hurdy Gurdy Man" for example.

As John Peel so rightly says Hollywood Festival and the arrival of the Grateful Dead for their first performance in the UK was a defining moment. The late sixties / early seventies counter culture and music scene in the UK had always aspired to West Coast USA bands and their ideology of large outdoor concerts.

The 41 shows the Grateful Dead played in 1976 constituted a kind of shakedown cruise for the band, which had gone on hiatus from live performing in October 1974 and given only four concerts during 1975. In the spring of 1976, they suddenly reappeared with a film, The Grateful Dead Movie, and a live album, Steal Your Face, and between June 3 and October 15 they toured the U.S. They then woodshedded for four and a half months before re-emerging again in late February 1977, having recorded a new studio album, Terrapin Station. The only interruption in those efforts came with the New Year's Eve show they played at the Cow Palace in San Francisco, chronicled here, their first such seasonal appearance in four years.
