"The Great Pretender" is the U.S. reworking of "The Freddie Mercury Album", which was a posthumous compilation of previously released songs, about two-thirds of which were in the form of new remixes. Although the concept is the same, The Great Pretender replaces about half of the tracks with versions that were not on "The Freddie Mercury Album", resulting in all but one track being new remixes of the old material.

Lester Bowie's projects apart from the Art Ensemble of Chicago tread a high wire between challenging improvised music and R&B-pop. This seeming dichotomy purports a universally appealing sound close to selling out, but speaks more to the whimsy and farcical elements Bowie sees in the hypocrisy of life. The Great Pretender is a perfect title for this effort, a mix of funk and humor, gospel and jazz, with no small points of reference to Dizzy Gillespie, early doo wop, Mahalia Jackson, James Brown, and Sun Ra. The lengthy title track modernizes the Buck Ram hit on many levels, as Bowie's sly, ribald, and comedic trumpet playing hits every nerve over a head nodding church hued backbeat, accented by the ooh-ooh vocals of Fontella Bass and David Peaston…

Dolly had recorded plenty of covers on her earlier albums, but this was the first devoted exclusively to such songs. Since then, Dolly has recorded several covers albums including Home for Christmas, Treasures, Precious memories and Those were the days. The songs here mostly date from the sixties, with a few earlier or later, which pattern was repeated on Treasures and Those were the days. Home for Christmas and Precious memories are themed albums and most of the songs on those albums are somewhat older.
