British prog-rock underdogs Greenslade reached their peak with their third album, SPYGLASS GUEST. While the dueling keyboards of Dave Greenslade and Dave Lawson still lead the charge, it's the first Greenslade album to feature guitar (Dave"Clem" Clempson of Humble Pie), and it's probably the band's most visceral effort. Their trademark balance between arty, fleet-fingered keyboard antics and grittier, more light-hearted tunes is refined here to the point of perfection, making this a lost prog classic.

Greenslade were something of a prog rock supergroup when they formed in 1972. Dave Greenslade (son of Arthur Greenslade, noted arranger for Scott Walker, Dusty Springfield and many more) had been the keyboard player in jazz rock oufits Colosseum and If. Bass player Tony Reeves also came from the ranks of Colosseum, while drummer Andy McCulloch had been in the "Lizard" line-up of King Crimson. Vocalist/second keyboard player Dave Lawson had been in Episode Six and The Alan Bown Set and the unique ‘two keyboards/no guitar lineup’ gave them a signature sound. This Edsel package contains the group’s third and fourth albums, originally issued on the Warner Bros. label in 1974 and 1975. The booklet contains all the lyrics, and annotation by Alan Robinson.

Excellent addition to any prog rock music collection.
This Greenslade's album is excellent, quite progressive and a bit keyboards oriented. The tracks are very varied. The 2 keyboardists use most of the imaginable vintage keyboards: rhythmic piano, clavinet, harpsichord, floating mellotron, rhythmic organ, Fender Rhodes and moog, among others.

This CD has some very impressive tracks - and the use of quotes from the book read by Tony Robinson and Stephen Briggs are very effective in creating a Discworld-like atmosphere full of "Narrativium", (see The Science of Discworld). Greenslade's obvious talent shines throughout and the vocals by Tim Whitnall, (from CITV's "Mike and Angelo", and CBBC's "Telletubbies"), are combined in my favourite track - "A Wizards Staff Has A Knob on The End". Just under an hours worth of music makes this CD a must for all Discworld fans. (amazon)

The absence of guitars in Greenslade makes them sound a bit different than the average band. Although the presence of two keyboard players could have resulted in some thrilling keyboard duels, the band have clearly opted for a more laid-back approach. More than half of the CD, five out of nine tracks, is instrumental and it is this half which is most proggy. The instrumental tracks basically sound like a cross between fusion and seventies prog and they contain some very nice melodies.

The last album from the original Greenslade does indeed feel like a lightweight afterthought, but this lends it a charming and unique lack of conceit. Animal Farm, Newsworth, The Flattery Stakes and The Ass's Ears are ridiculously catchy and memorable keyboard-driven pop/rock songs, and the rest of the record is never less than intriguing. Dave Lawson's lyrics are intelligent and concise, though putting the boot into the music press can't have helped their profile! An unpretentious and thoroughly enjoyable listen. (amazon)

This is very plainly a record made for the love of music alone. An exercise in deft tinkling of the ivories that covers a wide range of musical styles from robust pseudo-classical through to light jazz and on to airy instrumental pop-rock, there is plenty here that reaffirms Greenslade's compositional and technical abilities.

As a fan of this band from the early 1970's, I had actually given up hope of there ever being a "live" recording released. True enough, the producers probably didn't have too much material to work with when putting this together (and occasionally it shows), but this CD is still very worth having. It certainly evoked very strong memories for me of a couple of nights at Newcastle City Hall in the early 70's.
The CD features the original line-up, with recordings made in 1973 and 1975. As the (very limited) sleeve notes suggest, there is a marked diffence in the quality of the performances between the two years, and it also sounds like the audiences are much bigger in the later years!
