Psychedelic Archaeology is a series developed to unearth psychedelic audio gems from the 60's that have never been reissued since their original release. This series is a group effort specifically designed for distribution to U-SPACES members through trade. Since this is a relatively low budget affair, a master CD is burned from cassette copies of the songs. The sound quality is amazingly good however, (with a little EQ magic) but the vinyl snaps, pops and crackles are still audible. The master CD's are distributed to a few people who volunteer to be branches, and in turn distribute the CD's to even more people… all through trade. Initially, each CD will have a distribution of approximately 50-75.
From what I can make out all tracks on this double album are otherwise unavailable except one by Ion. Brendan Pollard kicks this latest volume off with 'The Neon Chamber'. With Brendan sequences are never far away and a lovely skipping bass one propels the track forwards within the first few seconds. The most gorgeous of tron melodies floats over the top providing a little softness. We then get a pastiche of one mid seventies Tangerine Dream sound after another but also with some of his own inventiveness.
There have been many Verve compilations of Jimmy Smith's material over the last few years. I like this particular one the best because it is a 2 compact disc set and contains more material. Although some of this material has been reissued (thankfully!) on the individual albums, is still contains material from albums which have not yet been reissued to disc. Jimmy Smith is arguably the best and most influential jazz/blues organist. ~ Amazon
A perfect summation of the Woody Shaw genius in the 70s – bold, righteous jazz – delivered with a soaring, joyous message that's impossible to deny! By the time of this release, Shaw had matured to a point where he was easily one of the most important voices on the trumpet in his generation – a 70s player who pulled together strands of the previous generation – from Coltrane to Lee Morgan to Larry Young – all wrapped up in amazing music like this!
