It was a great idea to unite in one CD two composers who symbolized the first generation of Germanic romanticism: Schubert and Mendelssohn, associated with Richard Strauss who was to incarnate with Mahler the last jolts of post-romanticism. Schubert composed his sonata for arpeggione and piano in A minor, D.821-1824, for an instrument whose very brief existence was the arpeggione. It begins with an Allegro moderato, developed in a passionate tone, but devoid of any feverishness or anxiety, elements that frequently appear in many works by Schubert contemporaries of this Sonata.

"When you don't have any money to go on holiday, you must make do by using your imagination," Debussy wrote, and the first two pieces in his triptych Estampes constitute an exotic travelog; the third piece is stay-at-home music, watching the rain. "Estampes" means print or engraving, and these three pieces are musical depictions of particular moments at particular locales. They also represent an interior journey of sorts, a newly personal idiom for Debussy, who is now seemingly unconcerned with the conventions and expectations of the salon and the concert hall.

Were just one example to be given of the richness and diversity of Mozart's achievements, Concertos Nos. 23 & 24 would undoubtedly make excellent candidates. Completed almost simultaneously in Vienna in early 1786, the two concertos contrast starkly and seem to have been written years apart – or by two distinct yet connected minds of equal genius. Even more astonishing is the fact that they were written in parallel with the first masterpiece of the Da Ponte trilogy, The Marriage of Figaro, while sharing with it very few stylistic similarities.

In the heart of summer, just a few steps from the beaches, two pianos were facing each other, played by Ismaël Margain and Guillaume Bellom. These two passionate young musicians impressed an audience, captivated by their four hands. They know each other perfectly, they go hand in hand and reveal the volume, the complexity, the fury and sometimes the tenderness of this romantic music. They express as well Schumann's melancholy as Chostakovitch's quasi-cinematographic liveliness. An intense moment, something like a short drama that was recorded by B Records for an album in relief, a black and white album.
