Great debut! Banda do Casaco surely had the knowhow and when freedom of speech came to Portugal (1974…so late) they started recording one album each year, and this was the first, in75. Itґs not better nor worst than their other abums from the 70ґs, at least the ones i know (the first three), wich indicates that this was a very consistent group of musicians despiste the formation changes and various guests…
Like in previous albums, the band took 800 years of Portuguese folk and refurbished them in modern sounds, courtesy of electricity, while at the same time maintaining the use of archaic and traditional instruments…
With this release Aqui, allay aculla, Banda Elastica celebrates its thirtieth anniversary. As fast as possible, our most expensive asset: time, present when we listen to ourselves in retrospective. Diluted decades in a few petrified glimpses with a specific weight and an element of their own… the facts the way they were, no regrets because the past is at its best and what a production to prove it!
Trapped in the sound of 1982, Gil's Um Banda Um album is covered with canned keyboards and synthesizer on virtually every track. And since it's not the best collection of songs he ever released, it's difficult for the listener to get into even after managing to focus on the songs. Though the joyous, nearly five-minute title track is a highlight, there's just a bit too much synthesizer on these songs. If it wasn't for Liminha's rather understated production, Um Banda Um would probably be rated even worse.
