Greenwich Village legend gets deserved superstar tribute. Eric Andersen is a song writing legend who hit the floor running with his early albums as part of the Greenwich Village folk scene of the early 1960s. He could folk with the best of them, but when he launched off with his own voice – well, ‘Thirsty Boots‘, ‘Violets of Dawn‘ more than pointed the way for those in his audience who would go on themselves to be major artists. And later recordings would unveil classics like ‘Time Run Like A Freight Train‘, ‘Salt on your Skin‘ and ‘Before Everything Changed‘. An artist perhaps most associated with the poetry and expression of love – and passionate love at that – Eric Andersen certainly doesn’t shy away from the topical or the political, being as bluntly harsh as a Dylan when he choses to be. It’s no wonder, then, that such a catalogue of great and notable names have taken part in this expansive – it covers three CDs – release which, as the title suggest, pays a tribute to a songwriter who, frankly, deserves such a tribute. Eric Andersen is not forgotten – he’s still recording and playing live after all – but one listen to this collection and one can only wonder why he isn’t even better known.

Gerhard Heinz started as young composer in the '60s. He worked for Polydor as a producer and as a singing coach for non-German speaking Schlager stars like Connie Francis, Milva, Rita Pavone, and Domenico Modugno as well as for Peter Kraus and Freddy Quinn. In 1961 composed his first scores for German and Austrian films, mostly B and C-grade comedies and sleazy soft-core action thrillers. Heinz frequently traveled between Vienna and Munich, and was soon highly-sought after for porn soundtracks. His music was an infectious soul jazz with funk and disco flavor.

Opened by Lena Spencer in 1960, this tiny room has played host to influential artists across diverse genres of music; traditional folk, blues, singer-songwriters, jazz and bluegrass. Luckily, many performances were caught on tape through the years, offering the listener a thrilling seat inside this hallowed venue. 'Live At Caffè Lena', a 3-CD box set, the result of years of investigative research, contains 47 tracks, all released for the very first time, alongside previously unpublished photographs. Images include selections from the archive of esteemed photographer Joe Alper, who captured many iconic, intimate portraits from the folk era of the 1960s.
