Harley

Kings/Queens is the 1970 by Philadelphia bagpipe master Rufus Harley. Released on Atlantic, the album features Charles Rainey (bass), Montego Joe (congas), Jimmy Johnsoon (drums), Eric Gale (guitar), Nadi Qamar (Mamalukembia, Madagascar Harp), and Richard Tee (piano). It was produced by Joel Dorn and engineered by Bob Lifkin and Lew Hahn. This CD was released by Atlantic Japan in 2013.

The tough biker Harley and his no less tough cowboy friend Marlboro learn that an old friend of theirs will lose his bar, because a bank wants to build a new complex there and demands 2.5 million dollars for a new contract in advance. Harley and Marlboro decide to help him by robbing the corrupt bank. Unfortunately they rob the wrong safety transport and get hold of an amount of a new synthetic drug. Now they are targeted both by criminal bankers and killers of the drug mob.

The Mask of Verdoy is first and foremost a page-turner. It sits comfortably in the thriller/mystery/detective genre something to take on holidays or read in bed to displace the stresses of the day but it adds a nice twist of historical authenticity. The novel is set in London in the nineteen thirties, a time of desperate poverty and ostentatious affluence.

A very special album from the newly-inaugurated Steve Harley Acoustic Band. 'Uncovered' includes interpretations of nine painstakingly chosen songs created in many instances by peers and contemporaries of Steve, those with shared histories and some that he admired from afar. These are songs with heft and honesty that have always connected and resonated within him; this is material that he's always wanted to perform and may even wish he'd written! This diverse collection of Harley's interpretations is in some ways an almanac rather than just a set of great tracks: Steve's links with some of the songwriters go back to the very start of their careers: Bowie in Beckenham; Dylan throughout his early teens; Cat Stevens/Yusuf and Paul McCartney, both massive early influences. Added into the mix are two songs from Steve's own incredible catalogue, reworked from the originals: 'Love, Compared With You' which now boasts a newly-composed third verse, plus 'Only You', played live for several years, but recorded here for the first time.
