The McCrarys (Linda, Alfred, Sam, and Charity McCrary, and sometimes Howard McCrary) were a gospel family group out of Los Angeles whose hip and urban style in the late '70s was well ahead of its time. Naturally, as a result, they never saw tremendous commercial success. This set combines two of the group's albums, 1978's Loving Is Living and 1979's On the Other Side, in a single package.

Alex or Aleck Miller, known later in his career as Sonny Boy Williamson, was an American blues harmonica player, singer and songwriter. He was an early and influential blues harp stylist who recorded successfully in the 1950s and 1960s. Down and Out Blues is the first LP record by Sonny Boy Williamson. The album was released in 1959 by Checker Records. The album was a compilation of Williamson's first singles for Checker Records, from "Don't Start Me to Talkin'" b/w "All My Love in Vain" through "Dissatisfied" b/w "Cross My Heart". The album features many famous blues musicians backing Williamson, including Muddy Waters, Otis Spann, and Willie Dixon. 2010 Extended remastered reissue by "Not Now Music" includes an additional CD "The Trumpet Singles." It's original 7" singles released on Trumpet Records 1951-1955.

Despite the name on the box set, this is a Trumpet Records rather than a Sonny Boy Williamson compilation. Most of the songs are by artists other than Sonny, and most of those don't even feature him as guest harp player. It is a great compilation of Sonny's tracks for that label, including alternate takes, but it's more than that. It's the story of Sonny's Trumpet Records. He was the label's star, and this box set charts artists - friends and accompanists - that orbited him then, including B.B. King, Big Joe Williams, Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup (Elvis Presley's favourite), Elmore James and Little Milton. Trumpet was the first label to record Sonny, and here the songs that he'd reprise for Chess might be more primitive, but it's their vitality that makes them better (compare "Eyesight To The Blind" on Trumpet with "Born Blind" on Chess).

Wayne Raney's considerable legacy hadn't been well served by the CD era at the time of this 2002 release. This 25-track anthology is a good if imperfect start to correcting that imbalance. It's imperfect because it doesn't by any means have every significant King side waxed by this important country-boogie singer and harmonica player. In fact, it hardly renders the best prior CD compilation of Raney's work (Songs of the Hills) redundant, since about half of the songs on that budget-looking disc don't appear here.

For many Deadheads, the release of Hundred Year Hall: 4-26-72 (1995) in September 1995 is inextricably linked with the passing of Jerry Garcia (guitar/vocals) a few weeks earlier. This double-CD features just under two-and-a-half hours of highlights from the Grateful Dead on April 26, 1972 at Jahrhundert Halle in Frankfurt, Germany. The band was in the midst of its Europe '72 excursion, not to mention a state of transition. Chronic health issues would force co-founder Ron "Pigpen" McKernan (vocals/organ/harmonica) off the road for good in less than two months.
