Harry Chapin's career as a popular singer/songwriter was cut short by an auto accident in 1981, yet he left behind a series of recordings that his fans continue to treasure decades after his death. Chapin was never a critically acclaimed singer/songwriter. Critics accused him of over-sentimentalizing his subjects and attaching heavy-handed morals to his socially aware story-songs; the heavily orchestrated arrangements that accompanied many of his songs didn't help his case with the critics, either. Nevertheless, Chapin earned a devoted audience during the '70s, through his music and his charity work as a social activist. Chapin began performing while he was in high school, singing in the Brooklyn Heights Boys' Choir and forming a band with his brothers Tom and Stephen.

Harry Chapin's brother Steve and his drummer Howard Fields remember: "On April 11th 1977, Harry Chapin and his band, near the end of their first tour overseas, performed a concert broadcast over German radio at a small auditorium in the city of Bremen in front of 400 people. The performance was akin to the calm after a storm in that it followed two consecutive arena shows (in Munich and Dortmund) where Harry would open up for a roster of rock, blues and heavy metal bands that featured The Small Faces, John Mayall, The Scorpions and headliner Status Quo. A more unlikely billing for Harry and the band was unimaginable. The crowd was very drunk, very loud and very not-at-all-interested in Harry's songs and sound. So, on the following night he was delighted to be back in his element, in Bremen, in front of a small, quiet, and appreciative audience attentively listening to his words and stories. Fueled by the change of atmosphere, a now energized Harry would speak and speak and speak, as if he were in Boston or Boise, to an adoring audience regardless of how many of his words were actually understood.

Harry Chapin didn't spend his entire career on Elektra Records, but the years during which he found his most significant commercial success were most definitely during the Elektra era, starting with his 1971 debut album, Head & Tales. This effort is, as you'd expect from its title, one of the eight albums contained within The Elektra Collection (1971-1978). The others, in case you don't know his catalog backwards and forwards - heck, you may not know anything at all beyond “Cat's in the Cradle” - are Sniper and Other Love Songs (1972), Short Stories (1973), Verities & Balderdash (1974), Portrait Gallery (1975), On the Road to Kingdom Come (1976), Dance Band on the Titanic (1977), and Living Room Suite (1978). Chapin was one of the great singer-songwriters of the '70s, and people should know him for far more than just his signature song. Now's your chance to dive in and educate yourself.

Excellent reissue, sound quality is A1. Probably the rarest of any Harry Chapin CD reissue. Who would have figured, listening to the heart-on-his-sleeve sensibilities of Heads & Tales in 1972, that Harry Chapin would or could ever generate a wry, sly, sardonic double-LP (single CD) album like this? The diversity of this album is its strong point, the core of the record made up of straightforward, serious songs, most notably "We Grew up a Little Bit" and the gorgeous ballads "Mismatch" (arguably Chapin's prettiest song) and "I Do It for You, Jane" (of which the latter could have been a smash done countrypolitan style in Nashville), and there's one lean vignette into traditional music ("Bluesman").

Verities & Balderdash is a very strange and wonderful album. “Cat’s in the Cradle” was the driving force behind the album’s sales, but there’s a lot more to appeal to listeners, along with enough personal, topical material to make it seem a bit didactic at the time, but Chapin was cultivating a politically committed audience.
