Steve Halpern is one of the true fathers of modern meditational and healing forms of music. Based partly on his metaphysical beliefs and partly on more solid scientific research into the effects of sound on the human body, He decided the answer was to create music that "didn't go anywhere" in the traditional sense but instead immersed the listener in a positive atmosphere conducive to recuperative and transcendental experiences. He took a certain amount of inspiration from oriental classical music and looked into the ceremonial, magical, and healing aspects of sound used by ancient cultures.

Jack DeJohnette has long been known as one of the most exciting and consistently stimulating drummers in jazz, one who always pushes ahead. Well, forget that musical description of DeJohnette, at least for this CD. DeJohnette is heard on a keyboard and, near the piece's conclusion, resonating bells, performing what is accurately described as "music for meditating, relaxation and healing." He has a droning tone going throughout this endless improvisation while his right hand plays long notes and brief, aimless melodies. One waits in vain for something – anything – interesting to occur, but it never does. To be fair, this is meant to be background music for one's deep thoughts. But after listening to this monotonous recital straight through, one will need a different form of "healing" music to recover from the mood that it casts! Even for new age music, this is incredibly dull.

Midnight Love is the seventeenth and final studio album (that is not a posthumous one) by Marvin Gaye. He signed with the label Columbia in March 1982 following his exit from Motown. The final album to be released before his death, it ultimately became the most successful album of Gaye's entire career. The disc was certified triple platinum in the United States, selling well over six million copies worldwide. It was nominated for a 1984 Grammy for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance, spawning the two-time Grammy Award-winning smash, "Sexual Healing". It was ranked number 37 on the Rolling Stone list of the best albums of the 1980s decade and the NME named the album as its Album of the Year in 1983. In 1998, Sony Music re-released the album as a two-CD "Legacy" edition set titled Midnight Love and the Sexual Healing Sessions. The same edition would be re-released in 2007, to celebrate the album's 25th anniversary since its release.
