This album is one of the reasons that Idris Muhammad is regarded as the drumming king of groove. Featuring the arrangements and keyboards of Bob James, the saxophone punch of Grover Washington, Jr., guitarist Joe Beck, trumpeter Randy Brecker, percussionist Ralph MacDonald, and the knife-edge slick production of Creed Taylor, this 1974 issue is a burning piece of deep, jazzy soul and grooved-out bliss…

Over the last decade, Lebanese DJ and traveling crate-digger has developed an obsession with the "golden age" of Ethiopian music in the late '60s and 1970s. Back then, Ethopian musicians developed a distinctive "Ethio" style that drew influences from a myriad of black American styles - most notably funk, soul, jazz, rhythm and blues, boogaloo and rock & roll - whilst remaining home-grown and East African in feel.

The funk flies fast and heavy, particularly on the title track (Jimi Hendrix's tune), with soaring solos by Grover and James, who fall down in the groove to Muhammad's powerful pace, setting from the heart of the pocket.

EAC Rip | FLAC (tracks+log+.cue) | 00:35:34 | 205 Mb
Soul Jazz | Label: All Things Analogue

Primarily based in Leeds, The Lewis Express is comprised of many of the musicians that have graced previous ATA releases: George Cooper, Piano (Abstract Orchestra) Neil Innes, Bass (The Sorcerers, The Magnificent Tape Band, Tony Burkill), Sam Hobbs, Drums (Dread Supreme, Tony Burkill, Matthew Bourne) and Pete Williams, Percussion (The Sorcerers, The Magnificent Tape Band, Tony Burkill). Recorded over an intense two-day session by the band of the same name, “The Lewis Express” is a nod to the classic soul jazz recordings of The Young Holt Trio / Young Holt Unlimited and Ramsey Lewis, from who this group take their name. But, delivered with a distinctly European feel. As with many of the classic Ramsey Lewis cuts this album was recorded live, capturing the rich inter-relationship between the players and leaving in some of that chunky room noise, lending the album a sound that’s as thick as a steak and raw as a carrot.

"Old school" organ combo fronted by a totally unknown veteran to me. A big positive surprise. Raised in Florida, Frazier's professional music career kicked off as organist in alto saxophonist Lou Donaldson's group and made his recording debut under his own name in 1972.
