Heinrich August Marschner was the most important composer of German opera between Weber and Wagner. To the extent that he is still remembered, it is largely for his operas Hans Heiling (1833), Der Vampyr (1828), and Der Templer und die Jüdin (1829), extremely popular in his lifetime. Marschner’s ability to depict supernatural horror by musical means is especially evident in the first two operas as well as in some of his ballads, such as "Die Monduhr". Next to his operas, Marschner's most significant musical contribution is to the Lied. The best of his works in this form are comparable with those by Carl Loewe.

An “exemplary instrument” was the Dreymann organ built in 1837 in the St. Ignaz Church in the centre of Mainz. This was written by someone who should know: Johann Christian Heinrich Rinck, composer, organ virtuoso, author of an organ school and expert in the service of the Grand Duke of Hesse-Darmstadt, who commissioned the construction of the instrument. Unfortunately, the organ did not survive the centuries and wars unscathed; minor repairs were made again and again, but it was not until 2015 to 2019 that it was restored from the ground up. This inspired organ professor Gerhard Gnann from Mainz to embark on a project close to his heart: students are bringing the old sound back to life; he himself is also involved, of course. The chosen works were naturally obvious: they are all by the aforementioned Rinck, who, by the way, was born in the same year as Beethoven and is thus also a 250th anniversary of this year. His works at the transition from the late classical to the romantic period bring out the fine nuances of the organ’s timbres to best advantage.

Today Heinrich Schütz (1585–1672) is considered the most important and influential German composer of the early baroque era. Even during his lifetime he was accorded the greatest esteem: Wolfgang Kaspar Printz, in a history of music published in 1690, reported that by roughly 1650 Schütz was “held to be the very best of German composers”.

The Rosary (Mystery) Sonatas, even today, are considered the most extensive example of scordatura. From the Italian discordare meaning ‘out of tune’, scordatura is a technique whereby the strings are purposefully tuned differently from their usual arrangement. Here the usual G-D-A-E tuning, where the violin strings are consistently a perfect fifth apart, is only used for the opening Sonata and the closing Passacaglia. The other fourteen sonatas each have a different configuration of tuning. Compositionally this allowed Biber to obtain unusual chords, opening up a whole new spectrum of harmonic and textural possibilities. This fundamentally altered what a violin was and could be; its physicality as well as its voice was transformed.

Date Rec: 1990 | CD: December 23, 2002

This cd is a reissue of the 1991 Gramophone Award winner for best baroque instrumental. The work consists of fifteen meditations on the mysteries of the rosary, plus a passacaglia for solo violin. Biber's reputation for technical innovation and virtuosity is fully in evidence here. The suites include programmatic elements, variously imitating such effects as the rustle of an angel's wings and the scourging of Christ. Only Sonata I and the passacaglia use a conventionally tuned violin; the remaining fourteen sonatas use scordatura tuning with extraordinarily resonant results.
