EXCELLENT 1984 SHOW IN JAPAN, IN THE WAKE OF THE PIVOTAL ‘ROCKIT’ SINGLE • Born April 1940, American jazz pianist, keyboardist, bandleader, composer, and occasional actor, Herbie Hancock started his career with trumpeter Donald Byrd’s group. He shortly thereafter joined the Miles Davis Quintet, where he helped to redefine the role of a jazz rhythm section and was one of the primary architects of the post-bop sound. In the 1970s, Hancock experimented with jazz fusion, funk, and electro styles, utilizing a wide array of synthesizers and electronics. It was during this period that he released perhaps his best-known and most influential album, Head Hunters.

Herbie Hancock's V.S.O.P. project with his former bandmates from the Miles Davis Quintet – Ron Carter, Wayne Shorter, Tony Williams – and trumpeter Freddie Hubbard was a band that almost single-handedly tried to re-establish acoustic jazz in the United States. And though they made three recordings, all of which were favorably reviewed and heralded by true jazz fans, none of them sold very well, and the band could find few gigs in the United States. The 1978 tour of major cities was thought to be a triumph at the time, but the unit could find few gigs afterward, and so its various members all went back to their other projects. In 1979, they got the opportunity to tour Japan and jumped at the chance. Sony, Hancock's Japanese label, recorded the two evenings, and the first, which took place during a furious rainstorm, was broadcast live on national television! Live Under the Sky marks the first time that this album has been available in the United States in any form.

Here we capture Joni Mitchell's performances at a benefit gig in Berkley, California on Labour Day weekend 1978. The undoubted highlights are the embryonic versions of 'The Chair In The Sky' and 'Goodbye Pork Pie Hat' (both destined to appear on her 1979 album Mingus). For these Joni calls on her good friend Herbie Hancock and the resulting duets are essential listening for fans of both artists. There are also two very different acapella versions of 'The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines' and solo renditions of 'The Wolf That Lives In Lindsey' and 'Furry Sings The Blues'. The version of her classic 'Circle Game' is taken from the closing encore of the event and features The Persuasions, Tim Hardin, Tom Paxton and Odetta. Every performance by Joni Mitchell is an important event but those present at the Greek Theatre in 1978 witnessed something truly unique. Professionally re-mastered WBUR-FM radio broadcast, complete with liner notes and archival imagery.

After Mwandishi, his early 70s experimental sextet, met with critical and commercial indifference, Herbie Hancock turned his gaze to Sly and the Family Stone and James Brown. The result was Headhunters, a new and tighter fusion of jazz and funk. Great tunes, high-precision grooves and vein melting solos. This appearance captures Herbie, Bennie Maupin and Anthony Jackson in full flight just after the release of their debut album, replacement drummer Mike Clark fitting in perfectly. Performed live at Fairfield Theater, East Lansing, MI on 28th 1973 for broadcast on National Public Radio.

First the caveats (and I am providing them for historical accuracy, so please do not take them as complaints.) Coltrane is only on half of the tracks (Four, Walkin' and So What). One of the tracks, So What, while technically a live performance was actually a canned performance that was broadcast from CBS-TV Studio 61, New York City on April 2, 1959. This was from a recently discovered video of a broadcast for a series titled The Robert Herridge Theater.
