Jonathan Harvey (born 1939) is one of the most exciting living British composers. This disc presents three contrasted works that exemplify his seemingly endless invention. Christian religion has long been a recurrent feature in his music and Madonna of Winter and Spring is Harvey's tribute to the Virgin Mary. Nimbus' crystal-clear recording highlights the glacial textures, themselves emphasised by the addition of two synthesisers to the instrumental ensemble. Harvey's grasp of sonority means he can summon up a deeply meditative state in the third movement, which leads to the ethereal, serene tribute to Mary which makes up the extended final movement. The Percussion Concerto (premiered by Evelyn Glennie, here with Peter Pommel as soloist), benefits from being a live recording: the excitement of the third movement is spellbinding, coupled with an accuracy that is hard to believe. Finally, Nimbus has reissued Penelope Walmsley-Clark's account of Song Offerings, settings in English of love poems by Tagore. The voice is very much part of the ensemble, which adds to the mystical intensity of the experience. This issue is the ideal starting-point from which to explore the hypnotic beauty of Harvey's music. –Colin Clarke/after Amazon.com

Only a few weeks after his 70th birthday the film director Werner Herzog met in Berlin with the composer and cellist Ernst Reijseger, the voice of Senegal, Mola Sylla, the Dutch jazz pianist Harmen Fraanje, the characteristic male voices of the Voches de Sardinna and the music producer Stefan Winter to perform »Eroberung des Nutzlosen« (»Conquest of the Useless«) with music and soundscapes. On two evenings in October 2012 Werner Herzog read (in German) excerpts from his text, which he has written during the adventurous production of his film »Fitzcarraldo«, that would become his most famous movie. Reijseger and his ensemble provided the musical accompaniment, and this double CD is a document of the occasion.

Stories is Jan Gunnar Hoff’s third solo piano album on the 2L label and is a sequel to his critically acclaimed album LIVING from 2013. On the new release Hoff stretches his creative abilities, presenting contrasting compositions and improvisations, in a distinctly personal mixture. Some of the pieces are meditative and expressive, while others have a strong rhythmic vibe. Stories also displays Hoff as an arranger, presenting versions of classics like “God Only Knows” and the traditional Swedish folk song “Värmlandsvisan”.

If listeners had to commit to a single version of Vivaldi's Four Seasons for the rest of their lives, this 1984 BIS recording would be thoroughly satisfying choice. Superbly played, brilliantly recorded period instrument performances of this perennial masterpiece are all but a dime a dozen, and the differences between Hogwood's and Pinnock's and Harnoncourt's readings don't begin to make up for the fatal boredom of their performances. This version with Nils-Erik Sparf and the Drottningholm Court Baroque Ensemble would be an ideal choice because theirs is the freshest performance of the piece. Beyond their excellent technique and impeccable sense of style, Sparf and the Swedish musicians bring joy and enthusiasm to the music, and sound like they are in turn receiving happiness and energy from the music. There's real pleasure here, and real affection, as if the concertos were newly composed and these were their world premieres. Filled out with witty accounts of Vivaldi's F major Concerto for Bassoon and his G minor Concerto for Flute and Bassoon, this disc is a delight.

Neidhart von Reuental was one of the most famous German minnesingers. He was probably active in Bavaria and then is known to have been a singer at the court of Friedrich II in Vienna. As a minnesinger he was most active from 1210 to at least 1236. Neidhart is very well known for being rather sarcastic and comical. More melodies survive by him than from any other minnesinger…

With Jungle City (Alessa, 2009), Norwegians Jan Gunnar Hoff (keyboards) and Per Mathisen (bass) documented their meeting with Peruvian-born Alex Acuna, a Weather Report alum who leapt onto the international stage, first as percussionist and then kit drummer, on the fusion super group's Black Market (Columbia, 1976) and Heavy Weather (Columbia, 1977). That, after a first rehearsal in Tromsø—situated in Norway's far north—Acuña jumped out of his seat, screaming "We have to play much more together!" only meant that Jungle City would, most likely, not be a one-shot deal.
