This very valuable release documents two important but underrated avant-garde units that were based in Los Angeles. Clarinetist John Carter (here also heard on tenor and alto) and trumpeter Bobby Bradford co-led bands for many years in virtual obscurity. With bassist Tom Williamson and drummer Buzz Freeman, they are both abstract and logical on four originals with Carter's passionate sounds contrasting, as usual, with Bradford's lyricism. The second half of this disc features L.A.'s great undiscovered legend, pianist Horace Tapscott. He is heard in superlative form on four tracks (including the 17-minute "The Giant Is Awakened") in a two-bass quintet also co-starring the young altoist Arthur Blythe.

There are very few musicians who can be turned towards to feel the beating heart of African-American ethos. Horace Tapscott is one of them. The blunt force with which he strikes piano keys is reminiscent of the hard edge in the deepest part of the blues. The angularity of his attack, which makes for a dramatic, slanted enunciation, also reminds the listener that the blues can also be beautiful and subtle.

Trumpeter Lucia Ianniello presents her unique drumless group for her second album on SLAM. This album is meant to conclude the research around the figure of Horace Tapscott and the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra (P.A.P.A.), which the trumpeter started tracing with her first CD 'Maintenant'. On this album, in addition to her original compositions, there are songs from the P.A.P.A.'s repertoire, especially those of Horace Tapscott and Jesse Sharps, Fuasi Abdul-Khaliq and Michael Session who Tapscott used to delegate to conduct the Arkestra in the '70s. There is also a song of pianist and singer, Linda Hill, one of the founders and a very active member of the movement of which the Arkestra was the musical and collective expression.

Chick Corea's greatest trio or small ensemble very likely is this one, with bassist Miroslav Vitous and drummer Roy Haynes.Their virtuoso level of musicianship and acute listening skills are translated into stellar recordings over two nights of performances in Willisau and Reutlinger, edited and condensed on this single CD. Where any outtakes are hiding might provide a further revelation, but as it stands, this release is a high-water mark for these brilliant musicians. Corea's strengths lie not only in his witty, effervescent playing, but in his compositions that showcase his mischievous personality.

Trombonist Lou Blackburn's contributions to jazz have been long overlooked, but Complete Imperial Sessions, a collection of his two jazz albums for Imperial, include the full contents of Jazz Frontier and Two Note Samba, plus a previously unissued track, and shows the potential of his early-'60s West Coast quintet, even though they worked infrequently. Trumpeter Freddie Hill is a capable foil for the leader, while Blackburn's fluid chops on his instrument invite an obvious comparison to J.J. Johnson. The potent rhythm section includes pianist Horace Tapscott, bassist John Duke, and drummer Leroy Henderson. Most of the disc is devoted to Blackburn's originals, sticking to bop and hard bop vehicles during the initial sessions…
