Hot Jazz on Blue Note is a four-disc, 72-song box set that boasts a cross-section of classic traditional jazz and jump blues from the Blue Note vaults. All of the material on the set is from the '40s, when the label was just beginning to establish themselves as a force in jazz. Among the leaders on the set include George Lewis, Sidney Bechet, Meade Lux Lewis and Albert Nicholas, while Charlie Christian, Ray Conniff, Red Norvo and many others are sidemen. Though it's not designed to appeal to purists, several of the tracks on the set have not been released on compact disc before, so hardcore collectors will find much of this set intriguing. However, Hot Jazz on Blue Note is targeted at the novice, who will find this sampler both educational and entertaining.

The use of multiphonics in jazz has been mastered by very few players, and while at times shrill and thin, can be enlivening and exciting. Rahsaan Roland Kirk and Albert Mangelsdorff set the gold standard, while several trumpeters like Rayse Biggs and Corey Wilkes have tried it with two brass instruments, and contemporary saxophonist Jeff Coffin gives it ago. George Braith holds a singularly unique place in the pantheon of these stylistas, following the path of Kirk in playing two saxophones while combining bop and soul-jazz. This set represents the complete works of Braith on Blue Note in 1963 and 1964 from the albums Two Souls in One, Soul Stream, and Extension.

85 years ago on January 6, 1939, a German-Jewish immigrant and passionate Jazz fan named Alfred Lion produced his first recording session in New York City founding what would go on to become the most iconic and longest-running Jazz label in the world. For 85 years Blue Note Records has represented The Finest In Jazz, tracing the entire history of the music from Hot Jazz, Boogie Woogie, and Swing, through Bebop, Hard Bop, Post-Bop, Soul Jazz, Avant-Garde, and Fusion, and — after being relaunched by Bruce Lundvall in 1984 — has remained the leading label dedicated to documenting today’s vibrant and creatively thriving Jazz scene under the leadership of current President Don Was, who took the helm in 2012.

Cassandra Wilson continues to move down a highly eclectic path on Belly of the Sun, the somewhat belated follow-up to Traveling Miles. While displaying a jazz singer's mastery of melodic nuance and improvisatory phrasing, Wilson draws on a variety of non-jazz idioms – roots music, rock, Delta blues, country, soul – to create a kind of earthy, intelligent pop with obvious crossover appeal.

For 85 years Blue Note Records has represented The Finest In Jazz, tracing the entire history of the music from Hot Jazz, Boogie Woogie, and Swing, through Bebop, Hard Bop, Post-Bop, Soul Jazz, Avant-Garde, and Fusion, and — after being relaunched by Bruce Lundvall in 1984 — has remained the leading label dedicated to documenting today’s vibrant and creatively thriving Jazz scene under the leadership of current President Don Was, who took the helm in 2012.This collection, curated & selected by Don Was, uniquely represents its legendary catalog spanning the entire history of the music, with the pillars of Jazz history such as Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, Ornette Coleman, Robert Glasper, Gregory Porter, Norah Jones and many others. 6 tracks out of 10 on CD1 are the latest remasters by Kevin Gray, made for Blue Note’s signature Tone Poet & Classic Vinyl series — available here for the first time in CD format. Presented in a 2-CD jewel with obi-strip, with an introduction by Don Was and a (translated) note about the history of the label by Mitsutaka Nagira, CD1 celebrates some of the most iconic Blue Note legends, while CD2 is representative of the current roster of Blue Note artists shaping the future of jazz.
