I Am Sam

If you happened to listen to Kanye West’s song “The One” back in 2012 off of his G.O.O.D. Music: Cruel Summer compilation album, you might have heard the vocal stylings of a young Phoenix-based singer/songwriter named Sam Bruno. Bruno and her creative partner Lifted first caught Kanye West’s attention in 2011 while on a trip to Los Angeles to promote their newly minted musical collaborations.

Samuel Kent "Sam" Harris (born June 4, 1961) is an American pop and theater musician as well as a television, theater and film actor. Harris got his start as the grand champion singer of Star Search in its premiere season in 1983. He gained acclaim and became best known for his winning rendition of the song "Over the Rainbow" on the show. "Over the Rainbow" has since become his signature song. His appearance on Star Search led to him landing a contract with Motown Records. His first single, "Sugar Don't Bite," was a Top 40 hit, reaching #36 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in November 1984. He is a multi-million selling recording artist with nine studio albums to his credit. He can also be heard on numerous concert, guest artist, and cast recordings.

Twenty-five at the time, tenor saxophonist Sam Newsome made his recording debut as a leader in rather fast company on this modern, straight-ahead set, teaming up with vibraphonist Steve Nelson, pianist Mulgrew Miller, bassist James Genus, and drummer Billy Drummond. Newsome holds his own, displaying a large tone and a fertile imagination on five standards and two of his originals. Highlights include "Intimacy of the Blues," "In the Vein of Trane" (which is similar to "Afro Blue"), "Indiana," and "Pent-Up House." Every selection is well worth hearing and Newsome sounds quite inspired by his surroundings and the stimulating material.

First a singer, then a writer, always a performer, Sam is a longtime singer and songwriter. Her debut album drops January 24th. Sam rocks out with several great musicians, including regular shows with Scotch Bonnet and Joe McGinty and The Loser's Lounge at Joe's Pub. She has also penned many tunes for other artists and commercials.

The new single, ‘Cos of You’ is one of the album’s most heartfelt moments, sounding like a long lost soul classic from the 60s – “It’s straight from the heart,” says Frankie. “It’s about losing my mother. I couldn’t finish it because I became too emotional, so changed the lyrics around a little to take it elsewhere but the essence of song remains – if I could do it all again I wouldn’t change a thing other than to have my mother in my life forever.”

I Am the Blues is the sixth studio Chicago blues album released in 1970 by the well-known bluesman Willie Dixon. The album features songs written by Dixon and originally performed by other artists for Chess Records (Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, Willie Mabon).
