“Rock’n’roll,” sang Alex Chilton on 1972’s “Thirteen”, “is here to stay…” We couldn’t agree more, so it’s a real honour to present Out Past Midnight: A Big Star Sampler, a compilation of hand-picked tracks from one of the greatest bands of all time. With this CD, we’re celebrating the 50th anniversary of Big Star’s Radio City, along with the live tribute shows later this year, and marking a half-century since Chris Bell set out on his solo career with I Am The Cosmos – but really, there’s no need for an excuse to immerse yourself in Big Star. You can read more about Chris Bell and that incredible, harrowing solo record in the same issue, dated October 2024 (it’s out in UK shops now, or available to buy online), but in the meantime spin these 10 tracks and chart the group’s journey from power-pop perfection on 1972’s #1 Record to the more unhinged, rawer grooves of 1974’s Radio City, and finally the expansive, avant-garde obliteration of Third, recorded in late ’74 and first released four years later. We hope you dig this sampler as much as we do, whether you’re revisiting these cuts, discovering the rarities or making your first ventures into the world of Chilton, Bell and co. As the former sang on “Thank You Friends”, it’s “never too late to start…”

I am a singer with many musical incarnations. Making this CD, with such excellent musicians, has fulfilled a dream, indeed, a dream that almost died, but, true to Life, has been reborn.

Parnell’s new album encompasses a realized vision that reflects the cumulative essence of who Lee Roy Parnell is today. He states, “One of the best things about gaining some maturity is you finally find out ‘Who You Is and Who You Ain’t.’ That said, I’d have to say that the song ‘Too Far Gone’ best describes me as an artist, now. It’s clearly a Blue-Eyed Soul ‘Beat Ballad’ as Barry Beckett (of The Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section and my first producer) would call it. Barry really taught me how to make records. He taught me about groove, soul, vocal delivery and how to make every note count! The message here is in life and love we ebb and flow. We have good days and tough days. What counts is going the distance (or at least as far as you can).”

It was a couple of years ago when I got my first Scott Ellison CD, Elevator Man. I enjoyed the heck out of it and we played several cuts from the album on the show. We didn’t hear much about Ellison after that, and that CD stayed on my shelf waiting for some new material to join it. Well, the wait is over, and I am happy to report that Ellison has released a monster of an album entitled Good Morning Midnight. The album has got a lot to offer. Besides the great blues and blues rock that Ellison is known for, he’s also got some swing music, a big band instrumental, and one song that had me reaching for a tropical drink.

Above the album worked the 'NOW Decades Of Soul ', and his release took place on 2021. The album has got songs with a total duration of more than an hour. A compilation is a compilation of original music.
