Robert Groslot studied piano at the Royal Conservatory in Antwerp. In 1974 he won the Alessandro Casagrande piano competition (Terni, Italy), and in 1978 he became laureate of the Queen Elisabeth Competition for piano. After these awards, he undertook several concert tours and was active in the field of chamber music. He played for many years with clarinetist Walter Boeykens, with whom he made several recordings on the Harmonia Mundi label. Other chamber music partners with whom he has recorded works on CD are cellist Roel Dieltiens and pianist Daniel Blumenthal.[3][4] From the start of his career he also gave piano lessons, initially at the Lemmens Institute in Leuven, later at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp and also for a while at the Utrecht Conservatory. At the Royal Conservatory in Antwerp, where he was also artistic director from 1996 to 2001, he taught chamber music in addition to piano.

The chamber cantata flourished in Italy as a counterpart to public opera and oratorio, cultivated by aristocratic patrons for their personal enjoyment. Perhaps because of its essentially private origins, this pervasive Baroque form remains relatively little known today. Between 2005 and 2009, Fabio Bonizzoni and his ensemble La Risonanza issued one of the most important CD series of the last decades. In seven volumes and featuring some of the brightest stars of the Baroque vocal galaxy – such as Roberta Invernizzi, Nuria Rial and Raffaela Milanesi –, Bonizzoni delivered milestone versions of all the chamber cantatas with instrumental accompaniment that George Frideric Handel composed during his stay in Italy (1706-1710).

Most music lovers have encountered George Frederick Handel through holiday-time renditions of the Messiah's "Hallelujah" chorus. And many of them know and love that oratorio on Christ's life, death, and resurrection, as well as a few other greatest hits like the orchestral Water Music and Royal Fireworks Music, and perhaps Judas Maccabeus or one of the other English oratorios. Yet his operas, for which he was widely known in his own time, are the province mainly of specialists in Baroque music, and the events of his life, even though they reflected some of the most important musical issues of the day, have never become as familiar as the careers of Bach or Mozart. Perhaps the single word that best describes his life and music is "cosmopolitan": he was a German composer, trained in Italy, who spent most of his life in England.

Although I Puritani was performed during the Metropolitan Opera's first season in 1883, it had not been seen there for decades until this production by Sandro Sequi was unveiled in 1976. It was one of the greatest triumphs for the partnership of Joan Sutherland and Luciano Pavarotti, and it is to the credit of all concerned in this recent revival that one soon forgets names from the past and enjoys what is a spirited attempt to evoke mid-19th-century style.

Herbert von Karajan was an Austrian conductor. He was principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic for 34 years. During the Nazi era, he debuted at the Salzburg Festival, with the Vienna Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic, and during World War II he conducted at the Berlin State Opera. Generally regarded as one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century, he was a controversial but dominant figure in European classical music from the mid-1950s until his death. Part of the reason for this was the large number of recordings he made and their prominence during his lifetime. By one estimate, he was the top-selling classical music recording artist of all time, having sold an estimated 200 million records.

Until she achieved a triumph in the delicate coloratura role of Elvira in I puritani - in Venice in 1949 under the tutelage of maestro Tullio Serafin - Maria Callas had been making her name in dramatic roles, such as the epically scaled title role in Die Walküre, which she had been singing just days before. Her success in Bellini's final opera set her firmly on the path to bel canto supremacy. Joining her as Arturo in this 1953 recording is one of her best-loved colleagues, the tenor Giuseppe di Stefano.
