Michael: The last studio I worked in was a supertech palace in upstate New York and it was minus ten outside. So here I am in a shed with a sod roof, annoying wildlife and helicopters in the warmth of a Cornish spring and miles from my comfort zone. We are so different, the two of us: a perfectionist and a gambler, a planner and a chancer. We might need a referee. This record has been meticulously planned, but I haven’t even heard the songs. I like it that way. The precision and sophistication of the writing and playing blows me away. I am so glad to be involved.
"High Voltage - If You Wanna Rock N' Roll" is absolutely not a unworthy tribute to Bon SCOTT. Everything is here ! The instrumental technique is led by guitar licks worthy of Angus YOUNG and the rhythm section amazingly reminds of the original AC/DC trio. Frans LEMEIRE's voice style could be defined as a subtle blend of Bon SCOTT's and Brian JOHNSON's. The peculiar look of our favourite Australians has been closely reproduced on the Spirit Of 66 (Verviers) stage, that 22nd March 1998. The schedule of that night included: "Riff Raff", "T.N.T.", "Whole Lotta Rosie", "Highway To Hell", "Let There Be Rock"… And of course "High Voltage" ! What was supposed to be just an enjoyable break for those Belgian musicians, led by guitar player Vincent FIS (NOW), is actually becoming a career… amazon.com"
Saxophone-piano duets have a long, illustrious history and the model of the genre – Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock no less – has recently been enriched by impressive works from fellow Americans Rudresh Mahanthappa and Vijay Iyer as well as Brits Jason Yarde and Andrew McCormack.
This offering is a worthy addition to the canon and proof positive of the currently healthy state of German jazz. Tenor saxophonist Sauer has been a highly respected figure on the Deutscher scene since the 50s while his two pianist partners, Michael Wollny and Joachim Kühn, represent the generations that have followed, the former making his presence felt in the last decade while the latter has been active since the 60s and made a notable entry in the sax-piano almanac by way of a whirlwind live set with Ornette Coleman in 1997. ~ BBC Music
If Time Stood Still, the debut solo release from guitarist Norman Johnson, is an exquisite expression of music that has been waiting to happen. From sonic grooves reminiscent of Wes Montgomery and George Benson to the mysterious, sultry melodies that frame Johnson's distinctive sound this recording is not to be missed. This album is well worth the wait with exceptional original songs in the genres of contemporary jazz, smooth jazz and Latin grooves along with the Pat Metheny cover tune, "Always and Forever."
Waterfall is the fifth album released by the English jazz rock band If. It was first issued in 1972 and reached #195 on the Billboard Pop Albums Chart. The original recording line-up was augmented by two new members, Cliff Davies and Dave Wintour, who filled the drum and guitar/bass chairs, respectively. The album was recorded in London at Command Studios in February and at Morgan Studios in July 1972. If was Great Britain's contribution to the jazz-rock movement begun and popularized in the late '60s/early '70s by Blood, Sweat & Tears and Chicago. Formed in 1969 by Melody Maker jazz poll winners Dave Quincy, Dick Morrissey, and Terry Smith, the band never found popular success in the United States.
All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
