Oscar winning composer Gabriel Yared is one of the most well-respected composers in film. Yared won an Academy Award for his score to Anthony Minghella’s The English Patient, which also won him a BAFTA, a Golden Globe and a Grammy. Yared was originally known for his work in French cinema, starting with Jean-Luc Godard and later Jean-Jacques Beineix (Betty Blue) and Jean-Jacques Annaud (The Lover). He also composed ballet music for works such as Clavigo for The Paris Opera and Wayne McGregor’s Raven Girl for The Royal Opera Ballet.“I hope that by listening to some of my film music and just closing your eyes, you can imagine and invent your own film. Shot on the busy and dangerous streets of Anywhere, USA, the controversial film is gaining notice for its provocative portraits of “bling-bling” culture and the “thug” mentality that inspires it. “I made this film to show young people who may be blinded by the flashy cars, and cash, to know what life as a thug is really about,” says former gang banger turned social activist/filmmaker Arthur “Silky Slim” Reed. “If they see the hurt and suffering that this lifestyle is causing people, then maybe it will wake them up. It’s time for a serious change to take place in inner-city America.”

By the time RCA Records and producer Felton Jarvis arrived to start recording some of his shows on August 21, 1969, Elvis Presley had already conquered Las Vegas. As another piece of his comeback that started with the 1968 ELVIS television special and continued with his first Memphis recordings since the mid-1950s, Elvis had been performing to sold-out crowds in the newly-opened International Hotel's main showroom since July 31. With a grueling two-shows-a-night, seven-days-a-week, schedule, Elvis had performed over 40 triumphant concerts in just three weeks. He was starting the last week of an engagement that, outside of four shows for small studio audiences during his TV special, represented his first live concerts in nearly nine years.
