In his seminal book on the composer’s life and music, Debussy, His Life and Mind (London, Dent & Sons Ltd, 1980 revision) Edward Lockspeiser, who spoke with many of Debussy’s own friends and colleagues and thus knew his subject particularly well, called his hero “ a unique artistic phenomenon in the history of music” (Lockspeiser 162). His analysis has clearly stood the test of time.
Norwegian duo Röyksopp compensated for the cold climes of their native Tromsø by making some of the warmest, most inviting downbeat electronica of the 21st century, exemplified by early tracks like "Eple" and "Poor Leno." Cardboard sleeve (mini LP) reissue release from The Smiths. The Smiths were the definitive British indie rock band of the '80s, marking the end of synth-driven new wave and the beginning of the guitar rock that dominated English rock into the '90s. Sonically, the group was indebted to the British Invasion, crafting ringing, melodic three-minute pop singles, even for their album tracks. But their scope was far broader than that of a revivalist band. The group's core members, vocalist Morrissey and guitarist Johnny Marr, were obsessive rock fans inspired by the D.I.Y. ethics of punk, but they also had a fondness for girl groups, pop, and rockabilly.
If you have ever had any curiosity as to what the piano music of German-Danish composer Friedrich Kuhlau sounds like, this Naxos disc will more than likely satisfy it. Containing the three Sonatas, Op. 59, and the three Sonatinas, Op. 20, in masterful performances by Hungarian pianist Jeno Jando, the disc will reveal a composer deeply indebted to the high classical style of Haydn and Mozart. While the Opus 59 Sonatas are in two movements each and the Opus 20 Sonatinas are in three movements each, they are uniformly light and delightfully lyrical works intended to instruct a player and entertain an audience.
