Charlie ‘Yarbird’ Parker should need no introduction; recognised as one of the twentieth century’s true musical greats, he revolutionised saxophone playing in the forties. The recordings on these three CDs capture him in the very act, and additionally present jazz at a crucial time, when swing was shortly to give way to bebop, and when the blues could be played with a big band before r&b took over. Many of the recordings here were not made commercially - some are from radio broadcasts, some were made in concert, and a few, such as the fascinating opener, just Bird and his sax tackling ‘Honeysuckle Rose’ and ‘Body And Soul’, were never intended to be heard outside of the immediate circle.

The Frémeaux label have done an admirable job of compiling the complete chronological recordings of major artists such as Django Reinhardt, Louis Armstrong and Mahalia Jackson. Now they turn their attention to Charlie Parker. This three CD set covers an exciting period when Parker and fellow bebop pioneer Dizzy Gillespie were shaking up the jazz world, not just at gigs but with widely distributed 78s. Most of the tracks, recorded in New York and Los Angeles, feature both men, in the studio and on radio broadcasts. A young Miles Davis also makes an appearance.

When Bird left New York he was a king, but out in Los Angeles he was just another broke, weird, drunken nigger playing some strange music. "Los Angeles is a city built on celebrating stars and Bird didn’t look like no star". -Miles Davis. The aim of 'The Complete Charlie Parker', compiled for Frémeaux & Associés by Alain Tercinet, is to present (as far as possible) every studio-recording by Parker, together with titles featured in radio-broadcasts. Private recordings have been deliberately omitted from this selection to preserve a consistency of sound and aesthetic quality equal to the genius of this artist.

The year 1947 was one of the most creative of Charlie Parker. This box presents in 70 tracks the legacy recorded during the second half of this fruitful year, the first session of Miles Davis under his name for the Savoy label on August 14, 1947 at the session for the label Dial on December 17, always with Miles Davis but this time under the name of Charlie Parker.

You really have to be blind to all the evidence if you refuse to see that Parker’s calibre was at least as prodigious as that of the greatest musicians of earlier generations. -Boris Vian. Charlie Parker did all the things I would like to do and more – he really had a genius, see. He could do things and he could do them melodiously so that anybody, the man in the street, could hear – that’s what I haven’t reached, that’s what I’d like to reach. -John COLTRANE. Jam Session [Recorded 1952]. Jam Session was compiled from a 1952 jam session which brought together three of history's greatest alto saxophonists; Parker, Johnny Hodges and Benny Carter, as well as Ben Webster and Flip Phillips on tenor sax. Orchestrated by Norman Granz to come as close to an authentic jam session as possible, this is the first of the Jazz at the Philharmonic series. The album includes an original blues tune ("Jam Blues"), a medley of ballads selected by each musician, and a mellow blues tune called "Funky Blues." The standard "What is This Thing Called Love," stands out particularly for its follow-the-leader style ending, with each musician trading fours. Interestingly, the meeting of these three greats, with their widely varying styles, results not in spectacular and fiercely competitive playing, but rather in a slight muting and sense of reserve from all three…

Musicians like to observe that for all his notoriety as the wellspring of bebop, Charlie "Bird" Parker's music was loaded with the blues. Swedish Schnapps is as good a place as any to make that connection with Parker's music, including as it does two of his most enduring bop heads based on the blues, "Au Privave" and "Blues For Alice." While you wouldn't mistake either composition for a Muddy Waters tune, both relate Bird's off-kilter accents and serpentine melodicism at walking tempos that let you hear what's actually going by, instead of leaving you astonished but bemused. To really drive the point home, there's "K.C. Blues," which finds the altoist at his hollerin' best, and "Lover Man," certainly one of the bluesiest 32-bar standards around.
