When it comes to landscape photography, chances are you won't be able to control your environment. Unless you live in the area where you're shooting and can pick the perfect day, the light and conditions you have are the light and conditions you have. In the final installment of his three-part series, Moose explores the Valley of the Gods and shows you how to deal with whatever nature throws your way. Plus, his extra-long post processing session in lesson 12 is practically a class in and of itself.

The Best Of Everything, the first career-spanning collection of all of Tom Petty’s hits with The Heartbreakers, his solo work and Mudcrutch, is released via Geffen Records / UMC. The 38-track set also features two previously unreleased tracks, including the collection’s lead single—an alternate version of the title track, which restores a never-heard second verse to the song that was originally recorded for the Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers’ 1985 album, Southern Accents. All 38 recordings on The Best of Everything have been newly mastered for this collection from the original stereo master tapes or digital files by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering, with supervision by Ryan Ulyate.

With the American Treasure box now out (at least on CD) news reaches SDE of another Tom Petty collection that’s due next month. As the title suggests, The Best of Everything: The Definitive Career Spanning Hits Collection 1976-2016 is more focussed on ‘hits’ than rarities, although inevitably the record label has added a couple of unreleased tracks.

Consider The Best of Everything a companion piece to An American Treasure, the first posthumous Tom Petty compilation. Weighing in at four CDs, An American Treasure was designed as a gift to the devoted who were still in mourning. In contrast, The Best of Everything is aimed at the fan who didn't dig quite so deep, or perhaps to listeners who always liked Petty but never bothered to purchase an album. The Best of Everything relies on the hits that were largely absent on the box set but it takes a similar non-chronological approach to sequencing, a move that emphasizes Petty's consistency as both a songwriter and recording artist. This distinguishes The Best of Everything from 2000's Anthology: Through the Years, which also spanned two discs and contained four fewer songs than this 2019 set. Apart from that notable aesthetic choice, there is a considerable amount of overlap between the two double-disc collections – namely, all the hits Petty had with and without the Heartbreakers between 1976 and 1993, when he switched from his longtime home of MCA to Warner.

When Tom Petty died in October 2017, he left behind a vault overflowing with hundreds of hours of unheard music. Much of it came from concerts, but there were also tons of demos, alternative versions of album tracks and even tunes he discarded completely over the years that have never been released. Once the initial shock of his sudden death subsided, his wife Dana, daughter Adria, producer Ryan Ulyate and bandmates Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench began poring through the material to create the upcoming four-CD box set An American Treasure, which arrives in stores on September 28th.

R.I.P. Tom Petty (October 20, 1950 – October 2, 2017)

Since 1976, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers have been one of America's finest rock & roll bands ever, combining the ringing guitars of the Byrds with the gritty rhythmic drive of the Rolling Stones. Petty's tales of American losers and dreamers were simple and direct, but emotionally charged. The Heartbreakers were a lean, tight band that could handle hard rock & roll and melodic pop equally well. The group gained critical attention and solid sales with their first album, but 1979's Damn the Torpedos was their commercial breakthrough, selling over two million copies; it couldn't have come at a better time, since Petty filed for bankruptcy before its release.
