Iro Haarla may not be particularly well-known, but the Finnish pianist/harpist's influence has been felt by anyone familiar with the work of her late husband, drummer Edward Vesala. According to saxophonist Trygve Seim—who not only played with Vesala towards the end of his life, but is also part of Haarla's quintet on her ECM debut, Northbound—Haarla was an uncredited co-composer on many of Vesala's compositions.

It's been six years since Iro Haarla released Northbound (ECM)—while not her actual debut as a leader, certainly her first with international exposure—an album of remarkable beauty that cemented the Finnish pianist/harpist/composer's position as the silent voice behind the music of her late husband, drummer Edward Vesala. There's no denying the import of Vesala's work for ECM, beginning with 1976's Nan Madol—truly a momentous album that spoke, in cinematic terms, of the landscape and culture of Finland—but, equally, a fundamental shift occurred, with the arrival of Haarla on 1987's Sound and Fury, that spoke to the impact that the young, classically trained Haarla had on the drummer's writing.

They are also all leaders or co-leaders of their own highly-lauded groups. The sextet was founded in 2009. Compared to her Finnish-Norwegian quintet that has issued two well-received ECM label recordings, for Kolibri, Iro Haarla has utilized the additional compositional possibilities offered by the sextet on seven unique, multi-faceted compositions. In addition to the piano, Haarla plays chen, a Taiwanese folk instrument, on two compositions.

This duet was Edward Vesala's idea. Both musicians were among his closest collaborators, pianist/harpist Iro Haarla (also his wife) for over 20 years, saxophonist Pepa Päivinen since 1984. This album, the duo's first, was recorded in December 2000, a year after the composer's untimely death. Yarra is an Australian aboriginal word meaning flowing, as in: time passes by, wounds heal, whatever happens water keeps on flowing. Half of the ten pieces included here are taken from Vesala's songbook. "Invisible Storm" constitutes a highlight, the composition moving away from jazz (even free jazz) to fall somewhere between this idiom and contemporary classical without the verbiage of Third Stream.

The drummer and musical visionary Edward Vesala was a strange bird. As one of the few whose records became less accessible the more composed they were, he marked his path by leaving not breadcrumbs but entire loaves, piping hot and ready to serve. His was a fresh sound, a living sound that, as the moniker of his ensemble implies, thrived also on the richness of fury.
