Bach Eskelinen includes works by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750), arranged for the guitar and performed by Ismo Eskelinen. The first versions of the items on this disc were dance suites composed for stringed instruments. There is also a separate movement that is in fact comparable to a little suite in length. Music by Johann Sebastian Bach has been performed on the guitar at least since the 19th century. A number of guitarists play works for solo violin or cello, and many have transcribed ones originally scored for keyboard. Works by Bach for lute have been in the guitar repertoire since about the middle of last century, thought some were probably intended for another instrument.

For his new recital disc, the acclaimed Finnish guitarist Ismo Eskelinen had the aim of creating a programme that works like a story: ‘a modern guitar album that lends itself to continuous listening from beginning to end’. The pieces that he has selected are united by the fact that, with the exception of Tan Dun, Eskelinen has collaborated closely with all the composers. In the liner notes to the album he expresses his admiration for how intuitively they all understood the essence of the guitar, even though none of them is a guitarist. ‘Everyone has found a unique way to bring his own musical style to the guitar, and each of the composers is clearly recognizable.’

Jan Vogler's new album was recorded in a small studio in New York. He teamed with the fantastic Finnish guitarist Ismo Eskelinen for this recording. ''Songbook'' presents partly pieces originally written for cello and guitar such as 3 Nocturnes by Friedrich Burgmüller (1806-1874) and the first movement of the Sonata for Guitar and Cello by Brazilian composer Radames Gnattali (1906-1988). ''Songbook'' also features several famous works in arrangements for guitar and cello: Cantabile by Niccolo Paganini (1782-1840), the Gymnopedie No. 1 by Erik Satie (1866-1925), the Suite Popular Espanola by Manuel de Falla (1876-1946) as well as the famous Aria from Bachianas Brasileiras by the most famous South American composer Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887-1959).

Although the Finnish composer Kalevi Aho is best known as a symphonist, his constantly expanding catalogue includes numerous concertos as well as countless chamber works and arrangements of works by other composers. This disc brings together works from these three genres. The Guitar Concerto, dedicated to Ismo Eskelinen, posed many challenges for Aho, who is not a guitarist himself.

It is a seven-movement work exploring the different ways the guitar can be used – sometimes with far from traditional techniques –and exploring its sonic possibilities. The Quintet for Horn and String Quartet was commissioned by Ilkka Puputti, who had previously premièred Aho’s Solo X for horn.

I often imagined the instructions Bach might give the performer of his music in the present day. What might he say? Describing Bach as a conductor in the 18th century, J.M. Gesner said he was full of rhythm in every part of his body. Bach himself stated his priorities in the title of his keyboard works: …above all to achieve a singing style. Knowing what a phenomenal organist and improviser Bach was, his example to us must be obvious. The music must live in the here and now- forever new. (Ismo Eskelinen) Ismo Eskelinen s career began when he was 17, spurred on by many prizes.

For her debut album, Karen Gomyo has joined forces with guitarist Ismo Eskelinen in a programme offering fireworks as well as graceful tenderness. A violin virtuoso as well as an expert guitar player, Niccolo Paganini wrote a number of works for the two instruments together. He thus forms a natural point of departure as Gomyo and Eskelinen embark on a journey some hundred years backwards in history, and offer works by three other famous Italian violinist-composers.

Neither the violin sonatas by Vivaldi and Locatelli nor Corellis celebrated La Follia were written specifically with the guitar in mind.
